Theatres Trust statement on Derby Assembly Rooms

Since the fire in 2014, the Assembly Rooms in Derby has been out of action. Derby City Council has begun work on designing a replacement venue. The current proposal is to replace the Assembly Rooms with a 3,000 seat music venue.

Theatres Trust believes a replacement is needed for the Assembly Rooms and Derby is currently unable to host large scale productions. We have recommended to Derby City Council that they continue to investigate a hybrid venue that can support touring theatre as part of a mixed programme. A large music venue is unlikely to animate the city centre throughout the week and without the ability to present a broad programme the venue may struggle to meet the needs of Derby’s residents and visitors.
