Communities and Local Government publishes National Planning Policy Framework

The Department for Communities and Local Government has today (27 March) released its National Planning Policy Framework. The National Planning Policy Framework sets out the Government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied.

The Localism Act 2011 received Royal Assent on Tuesday 15 November following eleven months of parliamentary scrutiny. The Bill progressed rapidly through its final stages, with MPs accepting all the Lords Amendments on 7 November. Speaking in the Commons on 7 November , Decentralisation Minister Greg Clark told MPs: “This is an historic bill, not just for the measures it contains but for what it represents. It is about striking out in a different direction. Power should be held at the lowest possible level.”

This is a fundamental omission, not only for the better protection of theatres which is legally enshrined in the 1976 Theatres Trust Act, but also in its lack of recognition of the role of culture and the arts in achieving sustainable development says Mhora Samuel, Director of The Theatres Trust.
