Government publishes The Culture White Paper

23rd March 2016

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has published The Culture White Paper, which sets out the government’s ambition and strategy for the cultural sectors.

The paper includes plans to:

  • Conduct a review of the museums sector, focussing on digital services and storage;
  • Launch a Great Place Scheme, bringing together national funders with local councils and universities to make culture “a core part” of local plans;
  • Launch a consultation on a scheme to offer all museums and galleries tax relief;
  • Open a virtual Commercial Academy for Culture to boost commercial expertise in the sector;
  • Create a £30m Cultural Protection Fund to support protection of cultural heritage in overseas conflict zones.

The Theatres Trust has been mentioned in relation to the adverse impact of new development on existing theatres.

The Theatres Trust already works closely with local planners and communities to help secure the future of theatres for their original purpose. We also need to ensure that cultural organisations are able to make use of empty spaces and buildings, and that new developments take account of existing arts and music venues and the need to create new spaces for culture.” (page 37)
