Glass pavilion in the sky will transform the Cinderella Southbank

The Southbank Centre is to undergo a radical £120 million transformation that includes a new glass pavilion in the sky. The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery are to be re-named the Festival Wing and closed for up to three years while the revamp takes place. But the end result will be new space for performances, exhibitions and socialising carved out of reclaimed and forgotten corridors and plant works on the 21-acre site.
Contenders revealed for UK City of Culture 2017 title

Eleven places from across the UK are bidding to be named City of Culture in 2017. The longlist features Aberdeen, Chester, Dundee, East Kent (covering Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone and Thanet), Hastings and Bexhill on Sea, Hull, Leicester, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, Southend on Sea, and Swansea Bay (covering Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Neath, and Port Talbot).
Belfast City Council increases arts funding 27%

Belfast City Council is to increase its spending on the arts by 27% after agreeing a £4.1 million funding package for more than 50 companies and venues as part of a new three-year support plan.

Henley's Kenton Theatre trustees angry over sign plan

A row over plans by the Kenton Theatre to install an outdoor illuminated sign is set to continue. The trustees of the theatre in New Street, Henley, are seeking planning permission for a 3.7m x 60cm burgundy aluminium sign to be placed above the canopy and supported by decorative brackets in the same colour. But town councillors have recommended the plans are refused and planning officials at South Oxfordshire District Council say the sign should be at least half the size.
Felixstowe Spa Pavilion demolition considered

Two bids to keep a Suffolk theatre as a leisure or entertainment complex have been rejected by the local council. The Felixstowe Spa Pavilion was closed by its owner Suffolk Coastal District Council in January. Two of the groups bidding to run it, Felixstowe Ambitions and Spa Pavilion Associates, have been told their proposals are not financially viable.
Boost for Blackburn theatre roof appeal

An East Lancashire theatre’s appeal to raise funds for a brand new roof has been given a major boost. The Empire Builders Appeal aims to raise £25,000 for the project at the Thwaites Empire Theatre at Ewood. The former cinema has been transformed from a virtually derelict shell to a thriving community resource in just over 10 years. The new roof will be the final part in the jigsaw.
