Conference 12: Delivering Sustainable Theatres - The challenge of achieving the triple bottom line

The Theatres Trust, The National Advisory Public Body for Theatres, has launched its sixth annual conference, ‘Delivering Sustainable Theatres’ – the challenge of achieving the triple bottom line.
Taking place on 12 June 2012 at Stratford Circus in London, next to the Olympic Park in East London, the Conference will explore how theatre buildings are managing their building’s resources and addressing their future sustainability. With its timing scheduled to take place the day before the ABTT Theatre Show, Conference attendees and sponsors will be able to take advantage of these co-located events, and network with the UK’s theatre sector as they congregate in London.
ABTT announce British tour of Guthrie Thrust Stage exhibition

The Association of British Theatre Technicians is delighted to announce the British tour of The Guthrie Thrust Stage 1948 – 2011: A Living Legacy exhibition, created earlier this year for the Prague 2011 Quadrennial of Scenography and Theatre Architecture.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre are proud to be hosting an exhibition of Ian Grundy’s theatre architecture photographs illustrating the huge variety of venues in the UK. From Opera Houses to “Found Spaces”, from Victorian music halls to 21st Century playhouses, some are pretty others are atmospheric but all contribute to the cultural life of their area. The photographs date from the mid 1980’s to the present day.
Conference: Power In Space - Historic architecture transfigured for contemporary culture

FCBS & Buro Happold are organising an event which brings international designers and directors together to create lively and uplifting debate. Innovation in re-using existing buildings for contemporary culture and performance will provide the focus. It will be held at Bath Abbey, who are kindly donating the use of this glorious medieval church. As well as compelling talks by top class professionals they will also be engaging with the Abbey’s physical presence, using materials, light and sound to create a sensory and intellectual experience to remember.

Seminar: Space Invaders: Converting Spaces - Creating Theatres 12 September

This seminar and discussion session focuses on the specific challenges of project management and technical installations associated with converting existing buildings into theatres. It includes the findings from The Theatres Trust’s annual conference in June 2011, ‘Converting Spaces – Creating Theatres’ which looked at ways in which civic buildings, warehouses, offices and town halls undergo conversion into theatres.

Seminar: The Frank Matcham Society - Theatres and Music Halls at Risk

A one day seminar organised by the Frank Matcham Society will examine the plight of theatres and music halls at risk throughout the UK. There will be case studies of recent work at two of our earliest surviving music halls, the City Varieties Leeds and the Britannia Glasgow. In addition to the contributions of those closely associated with these cases, other experts involved in similar projects will speak and will emphasise the importance of engaging local community support.
