Fears for Finborough Theatre

24th August 2015

The Theatres Trust has been mentioned in London Live

A tiny theatre above a pub in Earl’s Court is at risk of closing, according to those who run it. They say the Finborough is under threat from plans to convert part of the building into flats. We spoke to the artistic director to get his side of the story and to Shelley Chopra, the developer behind this project. She said she had been liaising with the Finborough and The Theatres Trust to ensure they are happy with the plans and should implement any recommendations it makes to ensure both the theatre and residents are not adversely affected.

Residential development boom is ‘worrying trend’ for fringe theatres

24th August 2015

Ross Anthony, Planning Adviser from The Theatres Trust, has been quoted in The Stage

Finborough Theatre artistic director Neil McPherson has warned of a ”worrying trend” that is seeing building developments threaten small venues.
McPherson, who has run the Finborough in west London for 16 years, is currently opposing plans for three residential flats to be developed above the auditorium.

McPherson’s comments follow an objection issued by Theatres Trust, which claimed the development could have “a negative impact on the long-term viability” of the Finborough.
“We are substantially concerned about the adverse effect the development will have on the long-term viability and operation of the Finborough Theatre located on the first floor of the building under the new and additional residential units,” a letter from Theatres Trust planning adviser Ross Anthony said.
