1,100-seat theatre planned for Bognor Regis

10th October 2016

Theatres Trust Planning Adviser, Ross Anthony comments on the proposed 1,100-seat theatre planned for Bognor Regis – The Stage.

The Theatres Trust has been consulted as part of the planning process. A letter from planning advisor Ross Anthony said the trust did not object to the plans, but raised several concerns.

Anthony said the trust recognised the importance of investment and regeneration in town centres through culture, but questioned whether the theatre would be a suitable replacement for the facilities provided at the existing Alexandra Theatre.

At more than three times the size, it remains unclear how the new theatre would “support and address the local need for small-scale theatre”, the letter said. It also warned that it might not be affordable or accessible to the types of performers and users of the Alexandra Theatre.

“The trust also strongly recommends that the new theatre is built before the existing theatre is demolished, or temporary theatre provision is provided, to ensure the existing theatre audience in Bognor Regis is maintained. It is extremely difficult to rebuild a theatre audience once it has been lost, particularly as the proposed theatre needs to increase audience numbers,” the letter added.

The trust also highlighted the task of competing with, and complementing, other established theatres nearby, which include Chichester Festival Theatre, and the Kings Theatre and New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth.

Harlech's Theatr Ardudwy confirmed as Grade II* heritage listing

6th October 2016

Theatr Ardudwy

Theatr Ardudwy in Harlech, Wales, has been confirmed as the first post war theatre building in Wales to be granted statutory listing.

This brutalist style theatre was built in 1973 as an arts centre attached to Coleg Harlech.

The college was listed Grade II* in 2001, though the theatre was largely omitted from the list description and was not considered to be part of the listing. Cadw have now reviewed that decision and confirmed that the theatre is already listed by virtue of its physical relationship and interconnection with the layout of the college buildings.

Cadw are currently updated the list description for the college to fully recognise the theatre building.

Scarborough's Futurist Theatre Named In At Risk List

30th September 2016

Theatres Trust Architecture Adviser Claire Appleby discusses the Scarborough Futurist’s inclusion on the Theatre Buildings at Risk Register – Yorkshire Coast Radio.

Claire Appleby from the Theatres Trust said: “It’s risen slightly up the list, that is in very simple terms due to increased risk of demolition. In 2014, the council submitted an application for prior notification of proposed demolition. Also at the time there were several attempts to list the building which unfortunately have since failed, which leaves the building ever more vulnerable. This raises it’s risk of demolition and hence raises the Futurist up our list.”
