Scarborough's Futurist Theatre Named In At Risk List

30th September 2016

Theatres Trust Architecture Adviser Claire Appleby discusses the Scarborough Futurist’s inclusion on the Theatre Buildings at Risk Register – Yorkshire Coast Radio.

Claire Appleby from the Theatres Trust said: “It’s risen slightly up the list, that is in very simple terms due to increased risk of demolition. In 2014, the council submitted an application for prior notification of proposed demolition. Also at the time there were several attempts to list the building which unfortunately have since failed, which leaves the building ever more vulnerable. This raises it’s risk of demolition and hence raises the Futurist up our list.”

Tunbridge Wells’ Royal Victoria Hall to be reborn as Southborough Hub

26th September 2016

Theatres Trust, Planning Adviser Ross Anthony has been quoted in The Stage.

“Given Southborough Town Council’s decision to close the Royal Victoria Hall, the Theatres Trust welcomes and supports the provision of a new theatre and cultural facility within the proposed Southborough Hub development,” a letter to the council from Theatres Trust planning adviser Ross Anthony said.

The letter went on to say that while the trust generally supported the scheme, it was concerned that the project was proceeding “without a decision on who and how the theatre component will be operated, nor a clear understanding of what facilities the theatre and hall users actually need”..

Harrogate Kursaal The architectural plans held at Theatres Trust are varied and numerous. Whilst cataloguing them for the Open up! Project we have been able to see the different types of proposals for each theatre, and what really interests me is looking at the different stages in the lifecycle of theatres – from being built, in use/maintained, and sometimes in other uses, at risk, or demolished. Theatres Trust gets involved with theatres at all stages in their lifecycle, advising on new theatres and theatre redevelopments, and campaigning for theatres at risk.

Not quite curtains for the last remaining act drops

6th September 2016

Patti small One of the pleasures of archiving regional theatre information from the Theatres Trust’s collection has been encountering historical information amongst the technical drawings, design reports, and planning applications. This information often comes in the form of a Conservation or Heritage Report, which many theatres produce in order to make a stronger case for refurbishment or restoration funding, or to prove that any historically significant aspect of the site has been taken into consideration for a theatre’s proposed works.
