Theatres Trust requests call-in of Brighton Hippodrome applications

10th July 2014

Applications: BH2013/04348 & BH2013/04351

Brighton & Hove City Council consulted The Theatres Trust on the above planning and listed building applications for partial demolition, subdivision and alterations to the Brighton Hippodrome for conversion into an 8 screen multiplex cinema and cafe/restaurant development. The Theatres Trust is strongly opposed to the applications. Read the Trust’s response and our 10 Key Objections

Brighton and Hove City Council is minded to approve both applications see the Planning Committee report The Theatres Trust has formally requested call-in to The Secretary of State. Read the Trust’s call-in letter. Read the Trust’s second call-in letter

To support call-in either write urgently to The South Team, DCLG, National Planning Casework Unit, 5 St Philip’s Place, Colmore Row, Birmingham B3 2PW or email: npcu@communities.gsi.gov.uk

Further general information on how to call-in and reasons for call-in can be found here.

Not only is the Hippodrome an unique Grade II* Listed Victorian Theatre of national significance, designed by the great theatre architect Frank Matcham, it is in fact the only surviving example of a circus-designed theatre in the country, and should be retained in its original form and used and appreciated as such for live events if at all possible. If this proposal is allowed to proceed we believe it will be irretrievably lost as a theatre.
