Every year, Heritage Open Days offers an opportunity for organisers to meet and learn from each other and sector professionals. This April, there will be three full-day Fairs offering a range of sessions to choose from. Topics include advice on marketing, sponsorship and grants, volunteering, interpretation and much more.

Heritage Alliance responds on the EH model consultation

The Heritage Alliance has submitted its response to DCMS on the proposal to establish from 2015 a new charity to manage the National Heritage Collection, alongside the renaming of the heritage protection services as Historic England. Taking into account the views of its members expressed at the December AGM, The Alliance is open to the principle of separation and welcomes the continuation of public ownership and guardianship for the National Collection. In particular, it welcomes the explicit endorsement by Government that investing in repair, maintenance, and interpretation is the best strategy to prevent the terminal decline of our valuable and irreplaceable heritage.

Revealed: bold visions to renew Bradford's Odeon

Bradford Council has received three formal bids from teams vying to regenerate the city’s abandoned Odeon cinema. The most audacious vision for the empty 1930 landmark, which was almost flattened to make way for a Carey Jones Architects-designed office development, comes from Saltaire-based Rance Booth Smith Architects.

Minister unveils details of specialist planning court

The planning court is one of the measures proposed in the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, published yesterday by justice minister Chris Grayling. It will employ specialist judges to deal with disputed schemes, who will work to fixed time limits. In September, the Ministry of Justice launched a consultation on its proposals to reform and speed up the judicial review process, which it said had “expanded massively” in recent years. A decision to set up the planning court was confirmed in the National Infrastructure Plan and Autumn Statement in early December.

Jestico + Whiles wins go-ahead for Southwark town hall overhaul and rehousing for Theatre Peckham

Jestico + Whiles has won planning for the conversion of Southwark town hall into 149 student flats. The 7,850m² scheme in Peckham Road, south London also includes a ‘contemporary sky lounge’ for students, gallery space, café and 12 artists studios. Backed by Alumno Developments, the project will see the existing Theatre Peckham moved out of its soon-to-be-demolished home – a former community hall attached to the north wing of the town hall – and rehoused in a new 200-seat facility set within a new public piazza.
