Derby Hippodrome fight goes on despite council cash setback

The Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust that wants to buy and restore Derby’s crumbling Hippodrome theatre has vowed to fight on after the city council said it could spend no more money to help. The trust wants to refurbish the front parts of the theatre, transforming the old entrance, box office and bar into space for performances, exhibitions and meetings, as well as a cafe.

ABTT Theatre Show 2014 dates announced

The ABTT has released dates for the ABTT Theatre Show 2014. It will be held on the 11 and 12 June, once again at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London. Registration for visitors opens on Monday 13 January 2014!

'Urban explorers' blasted for entering 'dangerous' Burnley theatre

‘Urban explorers’ who entered a disused Burnley theatre have been criticised for putting their safety at risk. Pictures have been posted online of the inside of the old Empire Theatre, in Cow Lane, on social media sites and shared on ‘urban explorer’ websites, which encourage people to explore abandoned buildings. The colourful facades and ornate balconies shown in the photographs provide a glimpse into the Victorian building’s former heyday.

Campaign to preserve Brighton Hippodrome

Because of its long history as a place of relaxation – not to mention its connection with generations of distinguished performers both as residents and as visitors – Brighton has a number of entertainment venues. Some of these are conventional, such as the Theatre Royal. Others include conversions and a whole host of pub theatres.

Aberdeen Tivoli to host first live show since 1966

Aberdeen’s historic Tivoli theatre is to open its doors to the public again with its first full-scale theatre production since 1966. The Tivoli Theatre Company Ltd is in the final stages of renovating the building before Attic Theatre’s production of Robin Hood and The Babes in the Wood is staged in December.

Fire at Plymouth Palace Theatre

14th October 2013

Firefighters were sent to the old Palace Theatre building on Union Street after a blaze broke out just after midnight on Saturday morning.

Crews were sent to the building, most recently the Dance Academy, at 12.20am. Rubbish and cleared debris was discovered alight at the back of the building, and was quickly brought under control. Devon and Somerset fire control said they suspected it had been started deliberately. The fire caused damaged to a small area at the outside of the premises.

Bedlam Theatre wins Venue Sustainability Prize at Inaugural Technical Theatre Awards

Bedlam Theatre has taken the entertaining sustainability Award for Venue Sustainability at the inaugural Technical Theatre Awards, presented at a ceremony held during the annual PLASA London live entertainment technology show at the ExCeL

Charlotte Hodge, Bedlam’s theatre manager, collected the Award on behalf of the student-led venue in Edinburgh. Tim Atkinson, technical director of :entertaining sustainability, was the award sponsor

The Technical Theatre Awards has been established to recognise the achievements of backstage staff in production, and was given considerable industry support, not only by its host, Tony and Olivier Award-winning lighting entertaining sustainability.com designer and former chairman of the Association of Lighting Designers, Rick Fisher, but by the industry sponsors who supported each award.

The Castle Players donate £750 towards The Witham, in Barnard Castle

14th October 2013

A community theatre group has donated £750 towards a North-East hall’s fundraising appeal. The Teesdale-based Castle Players presented the money to The Witham, in Barnard Castle, to boost a campaign to raise the remaining £70,000 needed to finish the building’s refurbishment.
