Axe will fall on funds for leisure says Wolverhampton City Council leader

Leisure centres, the Grand Theatre and the Civic Halls have been warned of further cuts to their grants as 1,000 council jobs face the axe. In a candid interview with the Express & Star Councillor Roger Lawrence, leader of Wolverhampton City Council, said the authority would focus on services that were ‘absolutely essential’ as it grapples with an £89 million black hole in funding over the next five years.

Hopes of early return for Byre Theatre dashed

Hopes that a “soft opening” of the Byre Theatre in St Andrews could happen in early autumn have been dashed. Fife Council has confirmed that it is “unlikely the building will now reopen until 2014”.

With funding squeezed, we’ve come to expect cultural cheerleading. Arts leaders fight their corner, championing their chosen discipline wherever possible. Theatre, we’re told, feeds television and film. It pays its way in VAT and cultural tourism and generally does this country proud. Look at War Horse, Jerusalem or One Man, Two Guvnors.

Hulme Hippodrome restoration plans announced by Youth Village

It was the place to be seen in Manchester when The Beatles played to packed houses, but the Hulme Hippodrome since fell into disrepair – now campaigners are hoping to raise enough cash to refurbish the Grade II-listed building. Local youth campaigners want to see the building, which featured an ornate three-tier theatre, a ballroom and a restaurant, turned into an arts centre and hub for groups in the Manchester area.

A multi-million pound transformation could be on the cards for a much-loved Edwardian theatre. This autumn, Darlington Borough Council will submit a £5m bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in an attempt to revive the town’s Civic Theatre – often referred to as the jewel in its crown.
