Derby Hippodrome fire prompts renewed safety warning for theatres

7th March 2016

The Theatres Trust has been quoted in The Stage.

The Theatres Trust has issued the alert following the third blaze to hit the Derby Hippodrome, which comes after last year’s fire at the Battersea Arts Centre in London and after a fire at the Assembly Rooms, also in Derby.

In a statement, the trust said: “Only a year after the BAC fire in London, this tragedy goes to show, once again, how vulnerable theatres are to fire. For those theatres that have been neglected by their owners and are at greater risk, it becomes doubly important to have foolproof safety and security measures in place.”

The advisory body also said it had “real concerns” about the future of the venue and that it was in contact with the local council to assess the damage to the grade II-listed building, which is also on the trust’s own Theatre Buildings at Risk register.

It added that it had been in Derby last week to discuss plans for a new venue in the town, following the closure of the Assembly Rooms last year after its own fire, and had been discussing “ways forward for the restoration of the Hippodrome” with the Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust.

Derby Hippodrome: Blaze tackled by firefighters

7th March 2016

The Theatres Trust has been quoted in BBC News.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a 100-year-old derelict theatre which campaigners had been hoping to bring back into use.

The Theatres Trust said it has “real concerns” about Derby Hippodrome’s future.

“This tragedy goes to show… how vulnerable theatres are to fire,” it said.

“For those theatres that have been neglected by their owners and are at greater risk, it becomes doubly important to have foolproof safety and security measures in place.

“We are in contact with council officers to find out the extent of the damage to the Grade II listed theatre, which is on our theatre buildings at risk register, and await the outcome of their investigation into the structural condition of the building.”

Theatres Trust responds to Derby Hippodrome fire of 6 March 2016

7th March 2016

The Theatres Trust have real concerns about Derby Hippodrome’s future following the latest fire on Sunday 6 March 2016.

The Theatres Trust is in contact with Council Officers to find out the extent of the damage to the Grade II listed theatre, which is on our theatre buildings at risk register, and await the outcome of their investigation into the structural condition of the building.

We were only in Derby last week, on the 3 March, talking to Derby City Council about its plans for a new large scale theatre in Derby following the closure of the Assembly Rooms last year after its fire. At the meeting we also discussed ways forward for the restoration of the Hippodrome. We’ve also been advising Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust who want to purchase, rebuild and reopen the theatre and who’ve just received an HLF start-up grant to help them value the building.

Only a year after the Battersea Arts Centre fire in London this tragedy goes to show, once again, how vulnerable theatres are to fire. For those theatres that have been neglected by their owners and are at greater risk, it becomes doubly important to have full proof safety and security measures in place.
