Boost for Blackburn theatre roof appeal

An East Lancashire theatre’s appeal to raise funds for a brand new roof has been given a major boost. The Empire Builders Appeal aims to raise £25,000 for the project at the Thwaites Empire Theatre at Ewood. The former cinema has been transformed from a virtually derelict shell to a thriving community resource in just over 10 years. The new roof will be the final part in the jigsaw.

Don’t penny-pinch over the Regis Centre plans

Former Bognor Regis town ?mayor Jan Cosgrove has labelled plans to extend the Regis Centre as penny-pinching. Mr Cosgrove helped to save the trust which ran the centre and its Alexandra Theatre from liquidation and closure under a previous regime. The theatre’s future looks the brightest it has been for decades with funding from any redevelopment by St Modwen paying for £6.5m of improvements. These will include increasing the number of seats from 360 to 430, new backstage facilities, a new foyer and an arcade of small shops to provide up to £50,000 a year in rent to help the centre’s running costs.

Multimillion pound redevelopment plans for Brighton Dome revealed

A multimillion pound redevelopment of an historic arts centre could be on the cards. Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival has been handed about £200,000 from the Arts Council to draw up plans to improve its listed venues in Pavilion Gardens, Brighton. Bosses at the organisation claim it is the first step towards a wider redevelopment project which will help secure its long-term sustainability.

Help is needed to boost Preston Playhouse roof funds

Theatre bosses are urging people to donate to their appeal to fix the roof at Preston Playhouse. The Raising the Roof appeal was launched last month to repair the roof of the building in Market Street West – so far just over £2,000 has been raised. The Playhouse needs to raise £20,000 for the work In total improvements, estimated to cost £50,000, need to be carried out.

Southsea City Bishop defends move to shut down struggling St Peter's Theatre

Bishop of Portsmouth has hit back at campaigners in the row over the closure of a city theatre. Supporters of St Peter’s Theatre in Somers Town have asked the council if they can make it a community asset. Acceptance of the bid would mean local people could put in an offer to buy it – but St Peter’s Church, of which it is part, maintains it wants to find another use for it. The theatre was closed by the church at the end of January because it was costing too much to run.

Grant approved to save Taunton's Brewhouse Theatre

28th February 2013

Councillors in Taunton have approved a grant of £152,000 a year to help secure the future of the town’s theatre. Brewhouse Theatre went into administration after the board said its financial position was “untenable”. An emergency payment of £35,000 “to help protect the property” also has support but has yet to be “rubber stamped”, a council spokeswoman said.

New look for former Glasgow Odeon as demolition begins

Workers from Dem-Masters are now on site emptying out the B-listed venue that is to be converted into a 10-storey office and retail block. Campaigners launched a bid to rescue the space, which drew interest from music show producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh.
