Comedy star's daughter backs Dudley Hippodrome campaign

The daughter of world famous comic, Stan Laurel, has thrown her weight behind the campaign to save a former Dudley theatre. Lois Laurel Hawes has written to the Friends of Dudley Hippodrome campaign group from her stateside home pledging her support, as they continue their fight to keep the former Castle Hill attraction from demolition by Dudley Council.

Birmingham Rep staff perform in caravans during refurbishment

The Birmingham Repertory Theatre is putting on plays in four caravans while refurbishment work is carried out. The theatre is getting a new 300-seat auditorium and as part of the £188m Birmingham library project.

Plea to use Bradford Playhouse as group launches new scheme

16th October 2012

Bradford’s famous Little Germany theatre will reopen its doors this month as a group of artists launches a last-ditch bid to save the troubled venue from closure. The former Bradford Playhouse, which went into liquidation with historic debts of £300,000 last September, will begin a “new chapter” as the New Bradford Playhouse and will be unveiled during an open day on Friday, October 26.

Wakefield Theatre Royal wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

Theatre Royal Wakefield will receive initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the restoration of its 1894 building, the smallest remaining Frank Matcham Theatre in the country. The organisation, based in Wakefield City Centre will also receive £152,000 in development funding to help progess their plans to apply for a full grant early next year.

BCCA fight goes on as campaigners turn to new law for help

The group trying to save the Boscombe-based Bournemouth Centre for Community Arts has applied to it to be protected under the Localism Act. The Friends of the BCCA have submitted an application for it to be listed as an “Asset of Community Value.” The former school is due to be part demolished and redeveloped in face of strong local opposition.

Lyric Hammersmith changing the landscape of West London

After six years of planning and fundraising, this year work starts on the Capital Project. As well as building a large extension to the west of the theatre the existing building will be given its first major facelift in over thirty years.

New Learning Centre at Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

15th October 2012

The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, North Yorkshire (GTR) has received initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the development of a Learning Centre, it was announced today. The Learning Centre will be established in memory of the Theatre’s former Associate Director Paul Iles who died last year and who bequeathed over £200,000 and his collection of theatrical ephemera to the Theatre for this purpose.

Soapbox Tony Jaggers: Hippodrome study is encouraging news for its future

The study on the future of Derby Hippodrome Theatre (Derby Telegraph, October 2) is extremely welcome, even if long overdue. Derby City Council must be congratulated on its positive action. Mounted in conjunction with English Heritage, the study should settle the future of this wonderful grade two listed building, described by the Theatres Trust as a “sleeping princess”.
