Council considers future of Marina Theatre in Lowestoft

The future of an historic theatre in Suffolk is being looked at by councillors next week. The Marina Theatre in Lowestoft – which was built in the 1870s – is run by Waveney District Council which saved it from demolition in 1985. But the council is concerned that the theatre’s finances pose a “serious risk” to the council’s budget.

Final Hackney Empire show signals nine-month closure

London’s flagship variety theatre, the Hackney Empire, has staged its last show before it closes for at least nine months, following financial problems. More than 150 youngsters aged between five and 18 took part in the Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School variety show on Sunday 7th February.

Highland Council unveils £12m spending cuts partly on leisure

Councilors in the Highlands are being asked to vote for a package of cuts worth £12m in the next financial year. Finance chiefs have also warned that the savings will have to be much more severe in the years to come. In subsequent years, grants to Inverness Leisure, who run the city’s acquadome, the Eden Court Theatre and a range of Gaelic organisations will be cut.

The authority has also unveiled plans for so-called Citizen Panels, to be made up of 2,000 members of the public, who will act as “sounding boards” on a range of issues, including spending plans. Councillor David Alston described the budget situation facing the authority as “extreme”.

Plymouth School has new outdoor theatre

Children at Hyde Park Infant School have plenty to make a song and dance about – after unveiling their new outdoor theatre. The wooden theatre, which boasts colourful sails, was the brainchild of the infants who also helped to design it and raise funds for its construction. The theatre was officially opened by Nick White from the Theatre Royal and Richard Marsh from Barefoot.

Shunt to keep its London Bridge home for another year

Experimental theatre group Shunt has secured its current venue in the vaults of London Bridge station for another year. The collective, which thought it would have to leave the space due to the planned redevelopment of the station, have been allowed to remain thanks to support from a number of organisations including Network Rail. The Shunt Vaults will reopen this Friday (February 5).

New £7.6 million theatre for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s theatre capacity has increased with the official opening of the £7.6 million Theatre at the Mill in Newtownabbey. Located on the northern edge of Belfast city limits, the 400-seat venue is housed in a former linen mill and forms part of a complex that also hosts the borough council’s new Civic Centre.

Aylesbury Civic Centre, car park and Maxwell Pool to be demolished by the end of the year

Three Aylesbury landmarks are expected to be pulled down by the end of 2010. The closure of the Civic Centre and its car park has been timed so that it coincides with the opening of the Waterside Theatre in October this year.

Royal Court London swaps stage for shops

3rd February 2010

An empty unit in an inner-city shopping centre is to be transformed into a theatre for six months. The Royal Court Theatre, based in Chelsea, will set up shop in south-London’s Elephant and Castle centre as part of its new Theatre Local project. Their artistic director Dominic Cooke said four plays, set between March and September, were about attracting new faces to the theatre.
