New blow for Scarborough Futurist as listing denied

Campaigners battling to save Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre say they are “mystified” over a government decision to not to list the historic building. The Futurist Task Group lodged an appeal last summer after English Heritage refused to give the theatre listed status.

Edinburgh Theatre Workshop restaurant plan is off the menu

Proposals to transform the city’s former Theatre Workshop into an upmarket restaurant have been refused after city planners said the building was too important to the community be lost. The B-listed Victorian tenement in Stockbridge was to be transformed into a 120-cover restaurant by developers after lying empty since the theatre operation moved out two years ago. Council planning officials had recommended the move, but councillors went against their advice this week and sided with campaigners.

Birmingham REP puts archive gems online to celebrate centenary

Newcastle Theatre Royal does the conservation award double

The recent authentic restoration of Newcastle Theatre Royal has received a double accolade by winning both the RIBA North-East Regional Award for Conservation and the RICS North-East Regional Award for Conservation. The project has also picked up an additional award from the RIBA in the form of their prestigious “Hadrian Award” for Architecture

New campaign to Save Salford Victoria Theatre

A new campaign has begun to save an iconic Grade-II listed theatre in Salford. The magnificent redbrick Victorian theatre on Great Clowes Street opened on Monday 10th December 1900. It was designed by noted theatre architect Bertie Crewe.

Project to understand the value of arts and culture launched

19th July 2012

A project that will advance our understanding of the value of culture was launched today 19 July. Directed by Professor Geoffrey Crossick, who steps down at the end of this month as Vice Chancellor of the University of London, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the project will run for two years and will address central questions concerning the value of arts and culture to individuals and to society. In doing so, the project will engage a wide range of academics and cultural organisations both in the UK and overseas.

Letter: Fear for future of the Doncaster Grand

Letter published in Doncaster Free Press: RE: Grand Theatre is on the at risk register (Free Press, July 12). It is no surprise that the former Doncaster Grand Theatre has been announced by the Theatres Trust that it appears on their ‘at risk register’. Let’s be honest about it, there’s nothing new about this information – The Grand has been on the Theatres Trust at risk register for umpteen years, The Grand, due primarily to the efforts of Ray Nortrop at Doncaster Council Watch, is also on the at risk register of Save Britain’s Heritage.
