£4m rebuild of Portsmouth’s New Theatre Royal boosted by major donations

A £4 million plan to redevelop the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth has moved a step closer, after the venue received £350,000 towards its regeneration. The money was awarded to the theatre by two separate organisations – the Monument Trust and the Foyle Foundation – and will be put towards its Regeneration Project, which is expected to begin early next year.

Corby Cube gets extra £500,000 funding

An additional £500,000 has been approved to be spent on work to complete Northamptonshire’s Corby Cube. The funding means the cost of the civic building, which houses a theatre and library, was approved by Corby Borough Council.

Bury St Edmunds' Theatre Royal and Apex could merge

18th July 2012

A new trust could be formed to jointly manage a new £18.5m arts venue and a Georgian theatre in Suffolk. St Edmundsbury Borough Council owns The Apex in Bury St Edmunds, which opened in 2010, while a separate trust runs the town’s 19th Century Theatre Royal. The council said the idea could make initial savings at both venues of up to £150,000 by sharing management, box office, catering and marketing. The Theatre Royal trust said it would provide a cohesive cultural vision.

Bexhill Cinema’s the ticket, says Theatres Trust

17th July 2012

The Theatres Trust is backing Bexhill campaigners in their fight to protect the old cinema in Western Road. The owner of the property, Ormiston Trust, is appealing against Rother District Council’s decision not to allow demolition of the building and redevelopment. In the meantime the Theatres Trust has restated its view the building is of “significant heritage” and an “asset of community value”.

Felixstowe Spa Pavilion group's plan facing rejection

The only group bidding to take over the running of a Suffolk theatre looks likely to have its plans rejected. The Spa Pavilion in Felixstowe is threatened with closure after owner Suffolk Coastal District Council voted to end its £250,000 annual funding.

Curtain goes up for new Tiverton Community Arts Theatre

Tiverton Community Arts Theatre (TCAT) opened its doors to the public for the first time on Friday 13 July, when touring company Bish Bash Bosh brought its production of Tin Violin to town. The theatre is based at Tiverton High School, and the committee hope to improve facilities there to encourage more companies to visit Tiverton.

Firm which evicted Greenwich Playhouse told to stop hostel work

A hostel company which turfed a popular theatre group out of its premises is being ordered to stop converting the venue into accommodation. Beds and Bars firmly denied it was making room for backpacker accommodation during the Olympics when it ended Greenwich Playhouse’s lease earlier this year. But the firm is being hit with a legal notice by Greenwich Council, warning them to stop converting the space into a 26-bed hostel until they secured appropriate planning permission.
