Bid to run Scarborough Spa Pavilion withdrawn

The group behind the only bid to take on the running of Felixstowe’s Spa Pavilion has withdrawn its proposals prior to their merits being formally considered by Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet on Tuesday 24 July.

Belfast Lyric Theatre short-listed for RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture

Belfast’s Lyric Theatre has been short-listed for the 2012 Stirling Prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The new theatre, which cost £18m, opened last May. It made the shortlist which includes six buildings from across the UK.

Fresh plan for the Swindon Mechanics' Institute

Swindon Council is working on costed plans to completely refurbish the exterior of the troubled Mechanics’ Institute in a bid to help find a sustainable use for the icon. The council hopes the work, estimated at £7m to £10m, will not only save the listed building from falling further into ruin, but also increase the chances of an end user coming forward.

New housing facility to replace Barry Theatre Royal as demolition commences

Construction of a new “extra-care” housing facility is set to begin when the demolition of Barry’s last remaining cinema ends next month (August 8). Work has begun to tear down the 100-year-old cinema, The Theatre Royal, which closed in 2008 – despite a public campaign the retain the venue.

New blow for Scarborough Futurist as listing denied

Campaigners battling to save Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre say they are “mystified” over a government decision to not to list the historic building. The Futurist Task Group lodged an appeal last summer after English Heritage refused to give the theatre listed status.

Edinburgh Theatre Workshop restaurant plan is off the menu

Proposals to transform the city’s former Theatre Workshop into an upmarket restaurant have been refused after city planners said the building was too important to the community be lost. The B-listed Victorian tenement in Stockbridge was to be transformed into a 120-cover restaurant by developers after lying empty since the theatre operation moved out two years ago. Council planning officials had recommended the move, but councillors went against their advice this week and sided with campaigners.

Birmingham REP puts archive gems online to celebrate centenary

Newcastle Theatre Royal does the conservation award double

The recent authentic restoration of Newcastle Theatre Royal has received a double accolade by winning both the RIBA North-East Regional Award for Conservation and the RICS North-East Regional Award for Conservation. The project has also picked up an additional award from the RIBA in the form of their prestigious “Hadrian Award” for Architecture
