Abergavenny theatre future looks brighter

The council agreed to transfer the management of the Abergavenny Borough Theatre to a charitable trust from April 1 to guarantee the long-term future of the theatre, which holds 55 professional performances a year from children’s events, to stand-up comedy, drama, opera and dance. Monmouthshire council previously agreed to provide £135,230 in funding fromits culture budget each year for the next three years while the Trust builds up its own reserves and to help with unforeseeable costs such as replacing equipment.

OVO theatre company to run Maltings Arts Theatre for next three years

St Albans District Council has agreed to extend an existing agreement with the OVO group to develop programming at St Albans’ Maltings Arts Theatre. The move follows a successful six-month pilot scheme in which the company increased audiences by at least 25%.

£400k Paisley arts centre overhaul starts

15th March 2012

Renfrewshire Council has announced the start of extensive renovation work at an arts venue in Paisley, which will cost £400,000 and is expected to take nine months to complete. Paisley Arts Centre, which is housed in a former church building in the town centre, is run by the local authority’s arts and museums service and will benefit from a series of repairs.

Church stages rescue bid for historic Nia Centre (former Playhouse) in Hulme

The former Nia Centre, former Playhouse, has been taken over by a church group who say they are determined to bring it back to use. Last year, work started on restoring the former Hulme Hippodrome next door and the projects will now run together.

The derelict cinema, in Crouch Street, has been closed for ten years and has become an eyesore. Now owner Steve Peri has admitted defeat in his hopes to redevelop the site as a nightclub. The announcement has been welcomed by local traders, who have complained the building brings down the area.

Southsea’s Kings Theatre’s Irving Room is restored to full glory

It was an iconic room that had seen better days. But now the Irving Room at the Kings Theatre in Southsea has been given a new lease of life thanks to the hard-working members of the venue’s trust. Located in the theatre tower, the room was once home to a small restaurant but was more recently used as a storage area. Water damage and deterioration had rendered the room unusable. But it now boasts Edwardian-style shelving, a bar area, delicately-crafted stained-glass windows and opulent wallpaper – giving it a true early 1900s feel.
