ABTT Show announces new East London venue for 2012

For 2012, the ABTT Theatre Show is moving to the ‘Old Truman Brewery’ a new venue for the event, located in the heart of a thriving and booming creative community in East London. The organisers say: “The move is in keeping with the creative and artistic roots of theatre and the ethos of the annual ABTT Theatre Show.”

Harrogate Royal Hall plans hit cash hurdle

A bid by Harrogate Theatre to take over the running of the Royal Hall looks “unlikely”, according to one of the theatre’s directors. Russell Davidson, who is also chairman of the Royal Hall Restoration Trust, said that unless the Harrogate International Centre (HIC) changed tack, the odds were against the theatre taking over the historic venue.

Lincoln's Ritz Cinema set to reopen

A cinema in Lincoln is set to reopen after standing derelict for more than a decade. The Ritz cinema on the High Street closed in 1996 but a community group has announced plans to renovate and refurbish the venue. Pete Genders, from Off the Bench, said it would open as both a commercial cinema and youth theatre this year.

Owner of old Odeon in Colchester says he may pull it down

Colchester’s former Odeon cinema is likely to be demolished and the site redeveloped. Steve Peri, owner of the rundown Crouch Street building says he has abandoned plans to convert the old building into a giant nightclub. Instead he is considering other options, such as building shops and homes on the site.

Bid to bring rep to the capital launched

A fundraising campaign has been launched to create a new traditional full-time repertory company in London, which would employ around 40 actors per yearly season. The London Repertory Company is the brainchild of RADA-trained director Michael Armstrong, who said he wanted to “revive theatre” through a repertory model.

Ownership suggestion welcomed for Ludlow Assembly Rooms

Ludlow Assembly Rooms could be handed over to the community as part of plans to secure the venue’s future for years to come, it has been revealed. Discussions are taking place between trustees at the theatre and officials at Shropshire Council over a community asset transfer deal. That would see the venue’s board effectively become the centre’s landlords. It is part of a drive to make the theatre financially viable in the long-term, and officials at Ludlow Assembly Rooms have revealed they are ‘very interested’ in pursuing the idea.

Berwick Maltings new maestro unveils big plans

Broadcasting major events such as football matches and the Olympic Games on the big screen is among a host of grand plans revealed by the new chief executive of the Maltings complex in Berwick. Matthew Rooke, who hails from Gavinton, also says he has ambitions to produce a show at the Maltings which can tour round the UK. Taking over the reins from Miles Gregory, Rooke started his new job on New Year’s day and is excited about the challenges that lie ahead.

Contractor named for Liverpool Everyman rebuild

Belfast-based builder Gilbert Ash NI has won the hotly contested tender with the Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust to build the new Everyman theatre on Hope Street.
