Details unveiled for £100 million scheme to boost private giving to culture

Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) today announced further details of the £100 million Catalyst scheme to boost private giving to the cultural sector and build long-term resilience, sustainability and innovation.

Southwark Playhouse must keep London Bridge home, urges council

Local council planners have weighed into the campaign for Southwark Playhouse, demanding that the theatre is included in the redeveloped London Bridge Station. The theatre, which is housed in the vaults beneath the station, announced last month that it will have to vacate the premises in December 2012 to make way for the building project.

AOC to design courtyard extension to 1950s theatre studio

AOC Architecture with Urban Space Management has been appointed to design a three-storey extension to the National Theatre’s Studio in The Cut building in London. Currently at the pre-application stage, the proposed structure would house workshops, offices and meeting spaces for Handspring Puppet Company – the group behind the West End sensation War Horse.

Southampton city arts scheme given planning permission

A new £21m arts complex in Southampton has been given planning permission by the city council. The authority says the 100,000 sq ft arts complex, restaurant and retail centre will create more than 300 jobs. Developer Grosvenor plans to start work on the site, located on the former Tyrrell and Green department store building, next summer.

Arts Council England responds to the Draft National Planning Policy Framework

Arts Council England has published its response to the Department for Communities and Local Government consultation on the Draft National Planning Policy Framework. The Framework seeks to significantly reduce the number of pages of planning policy and guidance but this streamlined approach has meant that arts and culture are not referenced.

Nick Giles to head Shoreditch Town Hall

Nick Giles has been appointed chief executive of Shoreditch Town Hall. Giles, who stepped down as executive producer at the Donmar Warehouse after six months in the role earlier this summer, said he wanted to make the venue a “destination space and creative hub in east London”.

Rendlesham: Villagers want to save former sports centre and theatre

There are fears in Rendlesham that the former sports centre and Angel Theatre will be knocked down to make way for housing. The theatre closed in 2007 with the sports centre, which housed Jets Gym, following in 2009, but people in the village want to see the buildings made available for community use. They packed an emergency public meeting at Rendlesham Community Centre last week to hear ideas for the buildings, which stand next to each other on Suffolk Drive.

Cheltenham Everyman reopens after £3m refurbishment

A Gloucestershire theatre will celebrate its 120th birthday in October following the completion of its first refurbishment in 30 years. More than £3m has been spent on the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, blending the modern with the theatre’s Victorian roots.
