Demolition of Farnham Redgrave Theatre proposed

Listed building application: WA/2011/1215

The Theatres Trust has made comments on the above listed building consent application submitted to Waverley Borough Council for the demolition of the Redgrave Theatre and conversion of Brightwell House to form two restaurant units including a single/two storey extensions to the north and west and alterations to Brighwell House.

The Theatres Trust has objected to the application. Read the Trust’s response.

Welsh arts council puts refurbishment ahead of new builds

14th September 2011

New-build arts venues will be a “rarity” in Wales over the next five years due to tight economic conditions, according to the Arts Council of Wales. ACW has announced plans to prioritise funding for arts organisations wanting to refurbish their facilities ahead of new-build projects in its new draft capital strategy for 2012-17. It states that “there will be no repeat of the high levels of funding” for projects experienced when Lottery cash first became available.

Maclesfield Cocoon theatre will be ‘world class’

Plans have been unveiled for a world-class theatre which could transform the centre of Macclesfield. Named The Cocoon after its striking design, it takes the shape of a silk cocoon to reflect Macclesfield’s silk heritage. Attached to the 700-seat theatre would be a 150-strong performing arts college, rehearsal rooms for use by the community as well as a bar, shops, and restaurants, with the possibility of a hotel and residential space.

New stage, studio and university accommodation for Portsmouth’s Theatre Royal

Portsmouth City Council has consulted The Theatres Trust on the above planning application for the construction of a 4 – 11 storey extension comprising of a fly tower and back-of-house facilities for the theatre; a performing arts centre for the University of Portsmouth and a student halls of residence at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth.

The Theatres Trust is currently considering the application.
