New stage, studio and university accommodation for Portsmouth’s Theatre Royal

Portsmouth City Council has consulted The Theatres Trust on the above planning application for the construction of a 4 – 11 storey extension comprising of a fly tower and back-of-house facilities for the theatre; a performing arts centre for the University of Portsmouth and a student halls of residence at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth.

The Theatres Trust is currently considering the application.

Owner puts £6m price tag on the Peterborough Broadway

The owner of Peterborough’s Broadway theatre has dramatically put the venue up for sale after the current management company failed to put on a show for more than a month. Rinaldo Fasulo, who bought the theatre for £9 million in 2004, has decided to cut his losses and put it on the market for £6 million. The news comes after more theatre goers turned up to the Broadway only to find another performance had been cancelled.

Sleaford Playhouse theatre refurb complete

Work has been completed on refurbishing Sleaford’s Playhouse theatre including installing new, more comfortable, raked seating. Sleaford Little Theatre, the amateur drama group which opened the theatre in Westgate 10 years ago, has been fundraising for the £33,000 project to improve comfort and sight lines for audiences sitting in the downstairs stalls, while increasing the size of the bar area.

Plans to turn Woolwich nightclub, N-tyce on Wellington Street, into theatre and cinema

Organisers behind plans to turn an old nightclub into a theatre say it could help Woolwich become a hipster hotspot. The proposals for the former N-tyce club on Wellington Street were due to be considered this month by a Greenwich Council planning board. But that meeting has been postponed until next month so more people can be consulted.

Government publishes plans to cut entertainment licensing

The government has published proposals to scrap many of the licensing regulations that campaigners claim are stifling live entertainment in the UK. The move was first mooted by tourism minister John Penrose in May of this year and the proposals have now been put out to consultation.

Byre raises curtain on brighter future

After a year of turmoil, the future is looking brighter for the Byre Theatre — but officials admit difficult times may still lie ahead. The Byre suffered a blow last June when arts body Creative Scotland announced it was pulling the plug on the St Andrews theatre’s flexible funding, worth £160,000 a year.

Newcastle Theatre Royal reopens after renovation

12th September 2011

Newcastle’s Theatre Royal will reopen following a six month, £5 million renovation project. The Grade I listed theatre’s Victorian auditorium has been recreated from the original architect Frank Matcham’s designs, which date back to 1901. New carpets, lighting, seats, wallpaper and gold-leaf plasterwork have all been refitted in the revamp.
