The loss of regional theatres due to government cuts, would be “an incalculable loss”, the Earl of Clancarty writes. Everyone in Britain deserves access to a local or regional theatre. Yet because of the current government’s cuts, affecting both central and local authority funding – the worst of which are yet to come – this access is now under threat.

Council seizes Dewsbury's former Pioneer Theatre building in legal purchase action

Pioneer House has dominated Dewsbury’s skyline since 1878 and its keys have now been handed to Kirklees Council. The authority is the owner of the landmark building after it made a compulsory purchase order against the development company that had owned it since 2005. It began legal proceedings to protect the building from further decay. Over the years the building, which is one of the largest and most recognisable in the town, has been home to a wide variety of tenants more recently including a theatre, cinema, library, french polishers, butchers, cobblers, and a restaurant.

Music hall saved after 'overwhelming' response to fund-raising appeal

The world’s oldest surviving music hall, Wilton’s in London, has been saved from closure after an “overwhelming” public response to an emergency fund-raising appeal. The crumbling venue, a relic of the Victorian East End, faced demolition after the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) rejected its £3.8 million application to begin essential repair work. But the owners said that sufficient funds had now been raised from the public to allow Wilton’s to stay open and to undertake urgent building work which will save the hall from collapse.

West Yorkshire Playhouse announces Sir Rodney Brooke as new chairman

West Yorkshire Playhouse has appointed Sir Rodney Brooke as chairman of its board. Brooke takes over from Brian Bouttell with immediate effect. As well as working in the public sector and taking leading roles in local government throughout the UK, Brooke has served on the board of English National Opera.

Scarborough Futurist theatre in limbo

A national theatre organisation has urged the Scarborough public to help the fight to save one of the towns most iconic buildings. The Theatres Trust wants people to get behind the campaign to help save the historic Futurist Theatre after it was placed on the Trust’s 2011 “at risk” register.

Blog: Welsh theatre buildings on 'at risk' register

18th July 2011

Ten Welsh theatres have been placed on The Theatres Trust’s 2011 Theatre Buildings At Risk register, double the amount of Welsh buildings that made last year’s list. According to The Theatres Trust website, there are estimated to be over 180 theatre buildings in Wales, of which 10 are identified as Theatre Buildings At Risk.
