Theatres face demolition says 2011 register

Fifty-eight theatres face “threats from demolition, neglect, local development, funding cuts and closure”, according to The Theatres Trust’s 2011 Theatre Buildings At Risk register (TBAR). Many theatres in private ownership remain “closed or in a poor condition”, including the Brighton Hippodrome, Plymouth Palace, Doncaster Grand, Aberdeen Tivoli, Swansea Palace, Garston Empire in Liverpool and the Cochrane Theatre in London.

Home improvements at Criterion Theatre in Coventry thanks to local businesses

Shortland Horne, which is based in Moor Street, has raised £500 for the city’s Criterion Theatre in Berkeley Road South to spend on new auditorium seating. The theatre is undergoing a huge fundraising exercise to help refurbish the property as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. Theatre bosses need to raise a total of £25,000 to finish the refurbishment work.

Owners of Chester’s former Odeon building ask Cheshire West and Chester Council to join forces

Owners of the Chester Odeon building have appealed to the council to work with them in delivering a new theatre for Chester. Cheshire West and Chester Council has just rejected plans by Hunter Street Ltd – part of the Barnsley-based Brook Group – including a 466-seater theatre/cinema/performance space plus restaurants, café and bars.

Decision due on future of Corwen Pavilion

14th July 2011

A final decision on whether Denbighshire Council can demolish the Corwen Pavilion is expected to be taken on Tuesday 19th July. In a telephone conference with the judge presiding over the case yesterday, the authority was told it had a “formidable case” to knock it down.

Workington Theatre Royal in need of cash and volunteers

14th July 2011

Workington’s Theatre Royal could be forced to close because of a shortage of cash and volunteers. The iconic building on Washington Street, built in 1845, is run entirely by volunteers from the Workington Playgoers. The theatre group, established in 1935, is able to meet its day-to-day running costs but needs more than £50,000 for a new boiler to heat the auditorium.

Wanted - Caring, creative and hard-working new owner as Liverpool Lantern goes up for sale

A fringe venue in Liverpool, which was transformed into a theatre two years ago, has been put up for sale. The Lantern Theatre’s owner is inviting proposals from organisations which are interested in buying the space. Co-owner Clare Keating said this was due to family and other work commitments. She said: “We have got another business, Tiny Giants, and the Lantern was always an extra to us. As it is, it is becoming more and more demanding and I have just had twins.
