Plans to demolish Bognor Regis Alexandra Theatre on hold

Plans to demolish the Regis Centre and its Alexandra Theatre are being put on hold. Developer St Modwen has been allowed to delay its multi-million-pound scheme for the seafront site. The company was due to have delivered its proposals for a new leisure complex there to Arun District Council by next March. But councillors have made an initial decision to enable the company to take more time while it focuses on developing the Hothamton car park off Queensway first.

Historic Liverpool Neptune theatre reopens as The Epstein

A famous Liverpool theatre is set to reclaim its place amongst some of the city’s most famous cultural landmarks. Following a £1 million investment, the refurbishment of the former Neptune Theatre is now complete. Now restored to its former glory, the theatre also has a new name. The Epstein Theatre is named in honour of Brian Epstein, the former manager of The Beatles.

Heritage Lottery Fund rejects Rose Theatre’s £2.1m grant bid

Plans to excavate the remaining third of the Rose Theatre on London’s Bankside and develop the site into a permanent exhibition and performance space have been dealt a blow after its bid for a £2.1 million Lottery grant was rejected.

Opera Action Ltd wants to turn Workington's Opera House into theatre hub

28th July 2011

A Workington pressure group will urge Allerdale council to scrap the town’s Carnegie Theatre in favour of the vacant Opera House. Building owner Graves (Cumberland) Ltd recently submitted plans to demolish the Pow Street building and three shops below it, and build apartments and new shops. The proposal prompted a group to be set up to save the Opera House.

Wilton’s survives after appeal raises £470k

Wilton’s Music Hall will stay open after a public campaign raised enough money for the organisation to start the urgent repairs needed to keep the 19th-century building in working condition.

ATG’s Potts appointed executive director at Almeida

26th July 2011

Julia Potts has been appointed as executive director of the Almeida Theatre, replacing James Bierman who left the London venue in June. Potts is currently serving as general manager of the Churchill Theatre in Bromley and has also been head of creative learning and access for the Ambassador Theatre Group across all its venues. She will take up her position at the Almeida in November.

Former Shirebrook Empire not sold at auction

26th July 2011

The former Shirebrook Empire was up for auction as Lot 19 Former Bakery and Bingo Hall, Station Rd, Shirebrook, Mansfield, Nottingham with Mark Jenkinson & Son. It was scheduled for auction on 19th July 2011 with a guide price of £200,000. The building currently remains unsold.

Corwen Pavilion ruling expected over building's fate

26th July 2011

Residents fighting plans to demolish a Denbighshire town’s community centre are waiting to hear if they have done enough to save the building. It had been hoped a decision over Corwen Pavilion’s future would be announced on Tuesday, but it is expected to be put back. In April supporters won a temporary court injunction to stop the planned demolition. Denbighshire council said the building was not financially viable to repair.
