Bloomsbury and Faber unite to create digital drama archive

Publishing houses Bloomsbury and Faber and Faber are to launch an online digital archive giving access to more than 2,000 years of drama. Drama Online, which will launch in October 2012, will offer access to digital versions of plays ranging from Greek dramas to recent hits and will include titles by Shakespeare, Chekhov and Ibsen, as well as modern works from writers including Caryl Churchill, Polly Stenham and Alan Ayckbourn.

Could it be the final curtain for Bournemouth's Pier Theatre

Bournemouth’s historic Pier Theatre will close at the end of this summer if plans for a new all-weather attraction are agreed by councillors. Dwindling audiences and high running costs mean the ageing theatre has lost nearly £400,000 in the last five years. So pier operators Openwide International have applied to change the use of the venue and turn it into an adventure sports attraction, complete with surf training wave, climbing walls and high ropes courses.

Curtains up at Snell's Garsington opera house

Snell Associates has completed its 600-seat ‘demountable’ temporary opera house for Garsington Opera. Constructed from timber, steel and sail fabric, the pavillion-like structure at Garsington Opera’s new Wormsley estate venue in the Chiltern Hills will open for the inaugural performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute on 2 June 2011.

Stoke's Basford New Vic needs memories for new theatre archive project Ages And Stages

Researchers are looking for people who inspired some of North Staffordshire’s most famous documentary plays so they can contribute to a new project. Keele University has teamed up with the New Vic Theatre, in Basford, above, for the £400,000 scheme called Ages And Stages. It has involved looking at the role the theatrical venue has played in local life and preserving community memories, and also how ageing has been portrayed on stage.

Documentary to record how Northern Ballet copes with ACE cut

Northern Ballet is to be the subject of a BBC documentary focusing on “the business of ballet”.. Filming of the Yorkshire-based company has already started and will show the day-to-day running of the organisation as it faces a 14.9% real-terms cut in its subsidy over the next four years.

Former ROH chief Kaiser to give fundraising masterclasses

Former Royal Opera House chief executive Michael Kaiser is to host a series of free fundraising masterclasses for arts organisations around the country, organised by Arts Council England. Kaiser, who was chief executive at the ROH from 1998 to 2001 and is now president of the Kennedy Centre, has previously helped turn around struggling arts organisations including American Ballet Theatre, Kansas City Ballet and the ROH.

DCMS looks to cull live entertainment licensing

Tourism minister John Penrose has announced that the government is proposing to scrap “bonkers” regulations which are stifling live entertainment in the UK. The Licensing Act 2003 was introduced by the last government and came into force in 2005. The law was intended to simplify the system of alcohol and entertainment licensing, with ministers initially saying the act would allow live entertainment to flourish.

Nantwich Theatre Project's Council funding boost

The Nantwich Theatre Project has been given a major boost with a £12,500 capital grant from the town council. The award-winning Nantwich Players group is now able to apply for larger funds in their bid to obtain up to £1.5m for a new theatre and arts centre.
