SOLT figures reveal 10% first quarter dip in West End audiences

West End box office returns were down 6% in the first quarter of this year, according to figures released by the Society of London Theatre. Compared to the same period last year – covering January 1 to March 31 – box office revenue dropped by 6%, while attendances were down 10%.

Domesday Reloaded: Remembering Lincoln's Ritz theatre

The former owners of Lincoln’s Ritz theatre have been back to the venue as part of the BBC’s Domesday Reloaded project. Barry and Brenda Stead bought the theatre in the mid-1980s with the aim of attracting some of the world’s best performers.

Theatre Book Prize Winner 2011 Announced

The winner of the 2011 STR Theatre Book Prize has been confirmed as Mike Bradwell’s The Reluctant Escapologist, published by Nick Hern Books. The prize, for books published in 2010, was announced by Claire Bloom at a ceremony on 18 May at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

St Peter's Theatre in Southsea faces uncertain future

A theatre in Southsea, at the centre of community arts for almost 90 years, is facing an uncertain future. St Peter’s Church on Fraser Road is considering relocating and selling the church building and the adjoining theatre it owns and operates. Campaigners say the theatre is “absolutely at the heart of the city’s thriving theatre scene”.

£14.6m new Llanelli theatre will get fiery name Y Ffwrnes

Y Ffwrnes has been chosen as the new name for the £14.6 million theatre and arts complex being built in Llanelli town centre. Y Ffwrnes (The Furnace) was the preferred choice of six shortlisted names — the others were Y Fforwm / The Forum, Canolfan y Stepni / The Stepney Centre, Canolfan Un / C1, Theatr Stryd y Parc / The Park Street Theatre and Theatr yr Ynys / The Island Theatre.

Campaigners set up petition for St Peter's Theatre

A local theatre is under threat of demolition and its users have set up a petition to save it. St Peter’s Theatre in Fraser Road, Southsea, was opened in 1924 and but now may be demolished. William Dawson,Chief Fund Raiser for the Theatre said, “The roundabout in Winston Churchill Avenue has been moved which has resulted in a plot of land becoming available. We understand that the vicar of St Peter’s Church is keen for a new church to be built on the plot. But this would result in the existing church and the theatre building being demolished.”

Apathy fears over Ludlow Assembly Rooms’ future

16th May 2011

Just 35 people have booked tickets to attend a crunch meeting to discuss the future of Ludlow Assembly Rooms, it was revealed. A public meeting to map out the way forward for the 300-seater theatre will be held on Thursday May 19 following a decision by the Arts Council to cut £60,000 of annual funding. But staff are concerned at the lack of interest in the town so far.

Help Transform the West Yorkshire Playhouse

It may involve entering a shadowy world, hearing the absurdities of modern life or converting to a cunning cult. What is the turnover of the Arts & Culture non-profit sector and why should we care?

One of the key points in the development of the Creative Industries was the 1998 Creative Industries Mapping Document issued by DCMS. The message of the total turnover of the sector as well as the breakdown into turnover and employment levels in the 13 subsectors was reinforced by the 2001 mapping document and between them gave the clear message that this sector was worth more than previously thought, was growing faster than the national growth rate and that we should therefore sit up, take note and decide what to do on a regional level.
