Scotland's theatre architecture revealed in new publication

A new booklet which looks at the architects and styles of Scotland’s theatres is being officially launched today, Tuesday 8th March at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal. Written by Historic Scotland and The Theatres Trust, the booklet looks at theatre design from 1736 up until the late twentieth century, ranging from Victorian opulence and Edwardian designs to 20th century conversions and post-war theatres.

Save The Connaught: Big Society could save Worthing theatre

The spotlight has been firmly fixed on theatre consultant Jon Woodley, 26, from Worthing, after he stepped in to spearhead the campaign to keep the Connaught open. He told fellow campaigners there was no point in just protesting – they also had to offer a solution.

Fears King's and Festival theatre refits fund will be used to ease money woes

7th March 2011

Theatregoers have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to improve two of Edinburgh’s best-loved venues but not a penny has yet been spent on refurbishment work. A £1 additional charge on all tickets sold at the King’s and Festival theatres was introduced in January 2010, with the money raised through the “theatre development fund” (TDF) to be earmarked specifically for improvements to the theatres.

Redbridge Council slashes £25 million from budget and withdraws Drama Centre funding

Millions were slashed from the Redbridge council budget last night in the biggest spending reduction in recent memory. Council bosses cut £25 million from the budget over the next three years. Residents protesting cuts to the celebrated Redbridge Drama Centre, Redbridge Music Service and the decision to close four public toilets in the area made their presence felt at the meeting in Ilford Town Hall.

Newcastle's Theatre Royal set to auction off interior on March 6th

One of the UK’s most historic theatres, the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, is offering the public the chance to own a piece of its history after announcing an auction of its interior. A special auction is set to be held on March 6th to sell off the old interior furnishings from the theatre ahead of a major refurbishment later this year.

Queen officially opens RSC theatre

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have visited Warwickshire to open the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) theatre. They watched a short performance of the balcony scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Mather returns to extend Hammersmith's Lyric Theatre

[First look] Rick Mather Architects has been appointed to design the £13.5 million redevelopment of the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, west London The practice has a long-standing history of working with the theatre, having overseen the Lyric’s first extension, which opened in 2005 and created a new frontage and rehearsal space.

Russia's Bolshoi theatre restored to its former glory

It has been dogged by delays and allegations of corruption. But finally, the restoration of one of Russia’s most iconic buildings is nearing completion. The finishing touches are being put to the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow and restorers are using a rather unusual medieval recipe to bring the building back to its former glory.
