MPs attack arts council in select committee report

Politicians have warned that Arts Council England has left itself open to accusations that its decision-making process on the new National Portfolio “lacked rigour”, in a select committee report which is highly critical of the quango. The report claims that cuts could be “disastrous” for the arts, but says that the culture world should “share the burden” of public sector savings.

Russell Grant helping closure-threatened Theatr Harlech with gala evening

26th March 2011

Russell Grant is doing his bit to help save a closure-threatened theatre. The actor and astrologer is headlining a gala evening at Theatr Harlech. Locals started a campaign to save the venue from closure after the Arts Council of Wales said last June it was stopping its £72,000 annual grant. The cut also hit 32 other Welsh arts organisations.

Former Borough Theatre demolished after years of laying empty

Campaigners tried to save it, arguing the building could be refurbished and turned into a cultural entertainment venue, but North Tyneside Council said it had become an eyesore and it was not financially viable to refurbish the site and a decision was made to knock it down.

Philanthropist Vivien Duffield pledges £8.2 million to arts companies

25th March 2011

Vivien Duffield today pledged £8.2 million in grants to 11 arts organisations including the Donmar Warehouse, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company from the Clore Duffield Foundation. The grants, which range from £125,000 to £2.5 million, have been awarded to the organisations to set up new creative learning spaces for young people.

Richard Eyre warns cuts will lead to “cultural apartheid”

Former National Theatre director Richard Eyre has warned that arts and education cuts could lead to a “cultural apartheid” in the UK. Speaking at an event about the future of the culture sector hosted by the Young Vic under the title “What’s Next?”, Eyre called the arts “weapons of happiness”.

Anger at Theatr Powys county council funding cut cut

The county council’s decision to cut funding to Theatr Powys – ending its resident production company after 38 years – has been slammed by the local councillor. County Councillor Mike Hodges spoke passionately at the council meeting when the funding was discussed. He said: “After 38 years Powys County Council has pulled the plug on Theatr Powys.

Save secures landmark ruling on demolition

SAVE Britain’s Heritage has secured a landmark judgment against the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government which will introduce new controls over demolitions of buildings and structures under UK planning law.

Save Our Cinema Association: Last-ditch bid to save Barry's Theatre Royal

25th March 2011

Campaigners held a last-ditch protest opposing the redevelopment of the Theatre Royal cinema building – before the decision goes to a planning committee next week. Supporters of the Save Our Cinema Association (SOCA) beeped their horns as they drove past the protest outside the Vale Council’s Civic Offices on Friday (March 18).
