Mitchell Memorial Theatre must 'stand on its own feet'

As work to redevelop the Mitchell Memorial Theatre nears an end, Stoke-on-Trent City Council says the new facilities will have to become self-sufficient in the future. The theatre closed in April 2009 for refurbishment costing up to £4.3m. Councillor Hazel Lyth said the build had been “causing lots of interest”.

Worcester Swan Theatre guaranteed same funding

The city’s Swan Theatre, Community Trust and Huntingdon Hall are among organisations getting a share of £300,000 for groups in the budget. Spending will fall from £13.6m to £10.9m in next year’s budget.

Gedling council changes Arnold Leisure Centre plan

Gedling Borough Council had wanted to replace Arnold Leisure Centre, that includes Bonington Theatre, with a new facility as part of a £10m facelift for Arnold town. The proposals to build the complex on the King George V Recreation Ground in the town had faced widespread local opposition. The authority said it will now look again at other options to improve leisure facilities in the borough.

First Street culture centre, Manchester seeks architect

Manchester City Council is seeking an architect for its project to build a new cultural centre scheduled to open in May 2012. Bringing the Library Theatre Company and Cornerhouse organisations under one roof, the project will feature a 500-seat performance space, a studio, classrooms and a major gallery for contemporary art.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen's Westminster College opens to include a theatre

[First look] Schmidt Hammer Lassen’s £67.7million City of Westminster College in west London has opened its doors to students. The college of further education houses workshops, labs, a sports hall, a theatre and a public café and was the largest project to be awarded funding by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) before the building programme was predominantly shelved in early 2009.
