Derby City Council has unveiled its draft budget revealing the depth of cuts proposed and showing no area is spared, reports Kirsty Green. A £17.4 million cut in Government funding and pressures on services mean Derby City Council is looking to make massive savings.

Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre site is near completion

Tickets for the first performance at Canterbury’s new £25.6 million Marlowe Theatre will go on sale shortly. Theatre director Mark Everett confirmed the first tickets will be offered to friends of the theatre in March. The public will be able to book tickets from April when the cast of the pantomime Cinderella is expected to be announced.

Hall for Cornwall puts arts on carbon cutting map

Hall for Cornwall has become the first arts organisation in the UK to complete a year of carbon emission cuts as part of the nationwide 10:10 campaign, breaking its 10% target and achieving CO2 reductions of 17%.

Newcastle Theatre Royal to hold auction of fixtures and fittings

Fans of Newcastle’s Theatre Royal can bid for a piece of its history at a special auction in aid of its forthcoming £4.75m refurbishment. All 1,200 seats in the auditorium will go under the hammer unless the people – famous or otherwise – who paid to have them inscribed opt to buy them first.

Guildford entertainment venue named by the public

Members of the public have come up with a name for a new entertainment venue in Guildford. The venue includes a 1,700-capacity auditorium, a 150-capacity studio theatre and conference rooms. The borough council said the £26m venue will be known as G Live when it opens in the autumn.

Fight to save Conwy Civic Hall from closure goes on

Campaigners trying to save the Civic Hall in Conwy from closure have set up a community interest company. The company has been established so that, if the campaign is successful and Conwy County Council agrees to transfer the lease of the hall to the group, the company will be in an immediate position to apply for external grant funding for future developments.

Public support is crucial to the survival of Workington's Carnegie rather than who runs it

The key to the success of Workington’s Carnegie Theatre is public support rather than who runs it, according to one of the organisations considering taking over the venue. Patric Gilchrist, executive director of Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake, said the Finkle Street venue was an important centre for the arts that Cumbria Theatre Trust, which runs the Keswick theatre, was willing to help develop whichever organisation ran it.

Disabled theatregoers to rate venues’ accessibility

Disability charity Scope is launching a nationwide campaign to assess and improve disabled access in UK theatres. As part of Scope’s Stage and Screen campaign, disabled people are being encouraged to post online reviews of theatres’ facilities, to inform other visitors about accessibility.
