New beginnings at the Glasgow Citizens Theatre

One could be forgiven for thinking the Gorbals is in the midst of being demolished. Opposite the Citizens Theatre, there’s a huge mountain of rubble where a high rise block used to stand. The theatre itself remains – even though the recent departure from the building of artistic director Jeremy Raison suggests one of Glasgow’s boldest institutions is undergoing a period of reconstruction and regeneration.

Fire damages former Lonsdale Cinema in Carlisle

A fire which damaged part of a former Lonsdale in Carlisle is being treated as suspicious. More than 20 firefighters tackled the blaze at the derelict venue in Warwick Road on Monday night. It is believed the fire started in the bingo hall area at the rear of the building, which closed in 2006.

Sir Peter Hall attacks 'insane' arts cuts

Theatre veteran Sir Peter Hall has described cuts to arts funding as “insane” in a speech at the Evening Standard theatre awards in London. Sir Peter, who has just turned 80, was being honoured for his contribution to world theatre. He urged an audience – packed with top actors and directors – to make “loud noises” against budget cuts. “It’s insane,” Sir Peter said. “I feel really ill at the thought of over 50 years thrown away.”

Norwich Theatre Royal reaches its £10m fundraising target

Norwich Theatre Royal’s major fundraising drive for its £10m refurbishment is finally complete, it was announced at the theatre’s AGM yesterday. The modernization of the theatre building was funded thanks to the support of a huge amount of individuals, businesses and trusts, and at yesterday’s meeting Peter Wilson, the theatre’s chief executive, said a big thank you to everyone involved.

Swansea Little Theatre's bid for makeover votes
