BAC and the Lyric Hammersmith to benefit from ACE investment

Battersea Arts Centre and the Lyric Hammersmith are to benefit from National Lottery funding totalling more than £17 million to help them make improvements to their businesses. The money is being distributed by Arts Council England as part of a project it is carrying out to “explore the most effective ways of supporting organisational development, income generation and refurbishment” of existing arts premises.

Scarborough Opera House Cherubs on loan to the Trust

15th December 2010

The Theatres Trust is delighted to welcome to the Resource Centre two groups of plasterwork cherubs salvaged from the Stage Boxes of the Royal Opera House in Scarborough, demolished in 2004. More information on the Opera House here

The groups of cherubs will be on show for the foreseeable future and we are grateful to Hayles and Howe specialists in the restoration of ornamental plaster and scagliola, who helped to salvage the cherubs and have loaned them to the Trust.

Doncaster Council welcomes Arts Council England investment in new performance venue

15th December 2010

Doncaster Council has signed a funding agreement with Arts Council England which will see the town’s much awaited new performance venue benefit from £2.1million of National Lottery investment. This important new cultural destination in Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ) has also been awarded £92,000 of support from the Arts Council in 2011/12 to enable the venue to develop its programme in advance of it coming on stream.

Director of artsdepot in North Finchley says he is 'disappointed' at Barnet Council cutting grant

Barnet council announced their proposal to cut all core funding to artsdepot in Nether Street. Artsdepot is the only professional arts venue in the borough and prides itself on being committed to providing a diverse range of high quality visual and performance arts.

Belfast Lyric to reopen in May

13th December 2010

Belfast’s new £18 million home for the Lyric Theatre is to open on May 1, 2011 after two years of construction and planning with a gala performance on its newly named Northern Bank Stage. The announcement comes as Northern Ireland’s largest theatre company revealed a five-year sponsorship deal with the Northern Bank in exchange for naming rights to its main, 389-seat performance space.

Dumfries theatre funds cultural clash

8th December 2010

Dumfries and Galloway Council has dismissed claims it has shown a “lack of commitment” to performing arts in the region. Alan Henry of the Guild of Players made the claim after the authority voted down a £315,000 funding package for the Theatre Royal in Dumfries. The council decided instead to focus its attention on a new cultural centre for the town.

Darlington should ‘prepare for change’ say Arts Council

The regional director of the Arts Council says that the future for arts in Darlington is positive despite stringent budget cuts. However, Alison Clark- Jenkins has warned that people in the town will have to prepare for a change in the way the arts are delivered if they are to succeed in keeping services such as the Darlington Arts Centre running.

Campaign launched to prevent redevelopment of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms

A last minute campaign to try and halt the refurbishment and upgrade of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms is gathering support from performers and audiences who have used the iconic Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue over the last 30 years. A website petition organised by Assembly Theatres Ltd, which runs the venue during the Fringe, has gathered almost 3,000 signatures in a week.
