Newcastle Theatre Royal to hold auction of fixtures and fittings

Fans of Newcastle’s Theatre Royal can bid for a piece of its history at a special auction in aid of its forthcoming £4.75m refurbishment. All 1,200 seats in the auditorium will go under the hammer unless the people – famous or otherwise – who paid to have them inscribed opt to buy them first.

Guildford entertainment venue named by the public

Members of the public have come up with a name for a new entertainment venue in Guildford. The venue includes a 1,700-capacity auditorium, a 150-capacity studio theatre and conference rooms. The borough council said the £26m venue will be known as G Live when it opens in the autumn.

Fight to save Conwy Civic Hall from closure goes on

Campaigners trying to save the Civic Hall in Conwy from closure have set up a community interest company. The company has been established so that, if the campaign is successful and Conwy County Council agrees to transfer the lease of the hall to the group, the company will be in an immediate position to apply for external grant funding for future developments.

Public support is crucial to the survival of Workington's Carnegie rather than who runs it

The key to the success of Workington’s Carnegie Theatre is public support rather than who runs it, according to one of the organisations considering taking over the venue. Patric Gilchrist, executive director of Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake, said the Finkle Street venue was an important centre for the arts that Cumbria Theatre Trust, which runs the Keswick theatre, was willing to help develop whichever organisation ran it.

Disabled theatregoers to rate venues’ accessibility

Disability charity Scope is launching a nationwide campaign to assess and improve disabled access in UK theatres. As part of Scope’s Stage and Screen campaign, disabled people are being encouraged to post online reviews of theatres’ facilities, to inform other visitors about accessibility.

Revamp of Newcastle Theatre Royal boosted by £300,000

Restoration plans for Newcastle’s Grade I listed Theatre RoyaL which opened in 1837 have received a £300,000 boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The money will go towards the £4.75m revamp which will take place in time for its 175th birthday in 2012.

Bangor Pontio arts centre 'to create hundreds of jobs'

A £37m arts and innovation centre in Bangor, Gwynedd, will create and safeguard hundreds of jobs, it is claimed. Bangor University’s Pontio centre will include a theatre with up to 550 seats. It is hoped that the development will open by spring 2013.

Globe to open new venue to programme year-round

An indoor Jacobean-style theatre is to open within the Shakespeare’s Globe complex in London which will make the venue’s programme year-round for the first time. The new space will be based on the original Blackfriars Theatre, which Shakespeare and the King’s Men played during their winter seasons.
