New Shakespeare stage puts audience "in the thick of it"

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre has undergone a transformation as part of a £112.8m scheme and reopened “on time and on budget”. The BBC was one of the first to take a look at the changes. A seat plays a recording of Dame Judi Dench when you sit on it at ground level in the foyer and at the highest level a new 36m (118ft) tower offers people views of four counties and key Shakespearean landmarks.

Unpublished Royal Shakespeare Theatre photos discovered A widow in Warwickshire has uncovered an unprecedented archive of Royal Shakespeare Company photographs, many of which have never been published. Margaret Goode’s husband, Gordon, worked as a freelance photographer from a studio in Ely Street in the 50’s and 60’s.

Ian Richardson ashes buried in new RSC theatre

The ashes of actor Ian Richardson have been buried in the foundations of the new £112m Royal Shakespeare theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Richardson and his wife Maroussia were founding members of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1961.

Cuts may force closure of Hull Truck Theatre

The future of Yorkshire’s famous Hull Truck TCouncillors in Hull will be discussing cuts of up to 40 per cent to the subsidy paid to the organisation.heatre could be threatened if its budget is slashed by councillors, its chief executive has warned.

Talks on future of Fishguard's Theatr Gwaun deadlocked

Talks over the future of Theatr Gwaun in Fishguard are at an impasse. Volunteers want to take over the stage and cinema venue to secure its future and have put forward their plans to Pembrokeshire council. The authority has offered them the building at a peppercorn rent for two years but says it cannot justify contributing to running costs as well.

The future of a theatre in Surrey is to be considered at a council meeting after a report on options available. A number of issues and necessary improvements to bring Walton Playhouse up to standard were identified in a condition and structural survey.

Welsh Arts Council's 'delight' at 4 per cent cut in funding

19th November 2010

The body that funds dozens of arts organisations across Wales was “delighted” its funding was only cut by 4 per cent in the draft budget. Among the organisations funded by the Arts Council of Wales are the Grand Theatre Swansea, Taliesin Arts Centre, Pontardawe Arts Centre and Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthen.

Crawley and West Sussex councils in theatre funding row

West Sussex County Council has been criticised for only supporting one theatre in the county. The local authority has confirmed it has given £2.6m to Chichester Festival Theatre since 2001, and no support to any other theatre during that time.

County leader defends cuts in funding the arts in Somerset

Leader of Somerset County Council Ken Maddock has defended the decision to slash the council’s arts budget. Councillor Maddock said that sacrifices had to be made and that everyone had to do their bit to balance the books, following criticism of the decision to end support for Strode Theatre in Street.

A new committee forms to save Conwy Civic Hall

18th November 2010

An action committee has been set up to fight for the future of Conwy’s Civic Hall. The well-attended meeting last Friday was held in the lounge area of the building. The top floor of the venue is to close on December 28, although existing bookings will be honoured until March 2011. The closure will save Conwy County Council around £20,000 a year, but the users of the hall have vowed to save it from closure.
