Campaign launched to prevent redevelopment of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms

A last minute campaign to try and halt the refurbishment and upgrade of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms is gathering support from performers and audiences who have used the iconic Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue over the last 30 years. A website petition organised by Assembly Theatres Ltd, which runs the venue during the Fringe, has gathered almost 3,000 signatures in a week.

Director appointed for new Guildford venue

HQ Theatres has appointed Alvin Hargreaves as the director of the new entertainment venue in Guildford. Hargreaves, who is currently general manager of the Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavilions will take up his position on March 28, 2011.

Pontio Project in Bangor has the environment at its heart

7th December 2010

The environment will be one of the key themes explored in the new Pontio development in Bangor officials said yesterday. The building, which will replace Theatr Gwynedd and the Students Union, has been awarded £27.5 million from the Welsh Assembly Government and is currently under construction.

Curtain to fall on Castle Theatre management company

The curtain could be about to go down on theatre bosses at The Castle in Wellingborough. The contract for the future running of the venue expires in January and Wellingborough Council, which owns the building, is expected to create a new company to run the theatre.

Dumfries Theatre Royal funding package plan frozen out

7th December 2010

Councillors have voted down a £315,000 funding package aimed at safeguarding the future of Scotland’s oldest working theatre in Dumfries. The money was aimed at upgrading the Theatre Royal building which was built in the town in 1792. The cash support had been backed by the local area committee. However, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s corporate policy members voted 10-8 against the plans to use the funds on the historic building.

Jacobs and Leeds City Council unwrap Northern Ballet centre

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Jacobs Architecture with Leeds City Council have completed this £12 million Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre project in Leeds. The six-storey building is the new shared headquarters of Northern Ballet and the and Phoenix Dance Theatre and will play host to the largest dance rehearsal space outside of London.

Theatr Harlech board to explain safeguarding plans

The community in Harlech in Gwynedd is being called to a second public meeting to hear about plans which could safeguard the local theatre. About 250 people turned up for the first meeting after Theatr Harlech’s future became uncertain after it lost £70,000 of arts council funding. On Monday, members of the theatre’s board will explain how they now intend to move forward.

Future of Barnet’s artsdepot at risk following proposed council cut

Barnet Borough Council is threatening to cut the £194,000 of funding it provides to artsdepot, in a move the venue’s management has labelled “shortsighted” and one that puts the organisation in a “vulnerable position”. On Friday, the council informed the venue it had drawn up a proposal to cut the annual funding it awards the venue – the only professional one in the borough – from April 2011, in light of the Comprehensive Spending Review earlier this year.

Exeter Northcott theatre faces new funding cuts

3rd December 2010

Arts Council England revealed last week that it was slashing its grants budget by seven per cent which affected a number of city organisations including Exeter Phoenix and Theatre Alibi. And the Echo can now reveal the amount it will award the Exeter Northcott is likely to be similarly cut.
