Theatre-going tourists spend £2.9bn in UK

More than 3 million foreign tourists spent £2.8 billion on trips that included going to Britain’s theatres last year, according to a new report from VisitBritain. Ten per cent of the 30 million overseas travellers who came to the UK in 2009 went to a stage show – ranging from classic Shakespeare in London to experimental fringe in Edinburgh, opera in Wales or a glitzy London musical.

Ambitious plans for new Fletcher Theatre in Rye

Plans have been unveiled this week for a new theatre and conference centre on the Lion Street site in Rye. Sussex South Coast College who own the FE centre site at Lion Street, have proposed a new housing development when the library re-locates to the High Street at the end of the year. But the move has been met with stiff opposition in the town from those who say the site, which was given as a bequest to Rye, should be retained for community use. Now a group of local professionals have come up with an ambitious plan which would see a new community venue which would include a theatre, education facility and could also be used as a cinema and conference centre.

Campaign to raise funds for historic Royal Festival Hall organ

London’s Southbank Centre has launched a campaign to raise £1.35 million for the refurbishment of the historic organ in Royal Festival Hall. As part of the venue’s Pull Out All The Stops, the public can sponsor one of the organ’s 7866 pipes, which range from one to 32 feet in length, for between £30 and £10,000.

SMG Europe set to run Scunthorpe Baths Hall and Plowright Theatre

North Lincolnshire Council has provisionally chosen internationally renowned SMG Europe Holdings Ltd to operate the £14m iconic Baths Hall entertainment venue and Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe. Around 70 jobs for local people will be created.

Northern Ballet Theatre rebrands as it moves to new Leeds home

Narrative dance company Northern Ballet Theatre is to change its name to Northern Ballet following a complete rebrand this autumn. The rebranding comes as Northern Ballet moves into a large purpose-built dance space in Leeds with Phoenix Dance Theatre.

Bat survey will delay decision on future of Workington Opera House

Workington’s demolition-threatened Opera House building has been granted a stay of execution after councillors ordered a survey of bats in the building. Graves (Cumberland) Ltd, which owns the site, wants to knock it down, along with three adjoining shops, to build an apartment and shopping complex. But there has been mass opposition to the proposals.

Arts must continue outreach work despite budget cuts, says Hunt

15th September 2010

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has told theatres that they must resist axing their education and outreach programmes, despite the cuts to arts funding which are expected this autumn. Speaking at the Media Festival Arts event at the Roundhouse in London, Hunt said that he wanted the arts sector to move away from ‘tick box’ targets based around ethnic and social data to using digital media to promote wider access.
