New lease of life for Gwyn Hall

18th May 2010

Refurbishment work has started on the Gwyn Hall in Neath, Wales more than two years after the building was almost destroyed by fire. The venue, which shows both professional and amateur productions, was nearing the end of a refurbishment project in 2007 when fire ripped through the venue.

Old Vic tunnels taking theatre back underground

Beneath the capital a new performance venue is stirring. Metro talks to the people taking theatre back underground. Down a side street, away from the taxis congregating at the front of Waterloo station, is a nondescript metal door barely glanced at by commuters hurrying past. Welcome to the Old Vic’s new theatre space, deep inside the alarmingly large network of disused tunnels that lie beneath the mainline train routes that carry thousands of passengers into Waterloo station every day.

Unicorn’s Alex McGowan to join Edinburgh Lyceum as executive director

Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum theatre has appointed Alex McGowan to the post of executive director. McGowan will also share the role of chief executive with the Lyceum’s artistic director Mark Thomson. McGowan, who is currently general manger of the Unicorn Theatre in London, will take up the job in July.

The Hawth helps Crawley Borough Council cuts carbon footprint

Environmentally minded council staff reduced energy consumption by a whopping 9.6 per cent in the last year. Boosting green credentials in a bid to reduce the town’s carbon footprint is a top priority for Crawley Borough Council; the 2009/10 energy savings saw a CO2 reduction of 7.6 per cent across the town hall, The Hawth Theatre and Broadfield Stadium.

Cash-strapped Hippodrome owner calls for ruling on car park plans

The owner of Derby’s Hippodrome is putting pressure on the city council to rule on a planning application for the site so he can start to clear his debts. The property in Green Lane is worth just £25,000 in its current state but would be worth £500,000 if planning permission for a multi-storey car park and houses was approved. And that is why its owner, Christopher Anthony, is keen for the planning application, lodged in 2008, to be processed.
