Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre set to undergo £25m makeover

The Festival City Theatres Trust, which runs the King’s Theatre on behalf of the council, is fundraising for improvements to the stage, auditorium, and backstage areas along with a new corporate hospitality area. The city council and the Heritage Lottery Fund will be asked to contribute £5 million each under the rescue plan with a similar amount generated via a public appeal. Work would begin in 2021. North Devon theatres to be handed back to the council ‘within a week’

A report by administrator Bishop Fleming LLP, subject to finalising legal documents, states that the leases of the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe will soon be surrendered to North Devon Council. Read more in North Devon Gazette

Industry groups give evidence on UK theatre

The Lords Select Communications Committee holds its first oral evidence sessions of its new inquiry into Skills for the theatre industry.

Using the theatre as a case study, the Committee examines how the UK can nurture and develop the talent needed to maintain the success of this country’s creative industries.

When: Tuesday 14 March, Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster

Possible questions that the witnesses may face include:

- What data and information is there regarding a possible future skills gap in the theatre industry? Is more research needed in this area?
- What role does Government policy play in this sector, in relation to schools, further and higher education?
- How does the development and maintenance of roles in the theatre support and interact with the roles in the wider creative economy?

The 58th Annual Civic Trust Awards Ceremony was held on Friday 10th March at The Guildhall, Winchester. From 247 applications, 45 national and international projects were rewarded with a Civic Trust Award or Commendation.
