Council go-ahead brings hope for Hackney Empire meeting tonight

The Hackney Empire has been granted a new ray of hope ahead of the public meeting into the theatre’s future tonight March 11. Hackney Council’s planning sub committee last night gave the thumbs up to proposals to redevelop the theatre’s Sixties office block in Wilton Way, Hackney Central, into a seven-storey complex of 25 flats and houses with a community space and café for the theatre.

£4.5m deal agreed to save Hackney Empire

A property deal that will save the Hackney Empire has been given the go-ahead. The historic theatre was forced to close last month because of a financial crisis. But now local councillors have backed a building development that should safeguard its future. Hackney council planning committee has given permission for a project to turn a Sixties office block next to the venue into 25 flats.

Plan to demolish former Workington bingo hall for flats

11th March 2010

Plans to pull down one of Workington’s historic buildings have been unveiled. Graves (Cumberland) Ltd wants to build apartments and shops on the site of the Opera House, on Tiffen Lane. The company has applied for outline planning permission to demolish the former bingo hall, built in the late 1800s.

Wales launches National Theatre Company

Wales is launching a new National Theatre Company, with a different approach. The company has no permanent theatre base and plan to take their shows to the people – performing in unusual places, from beaches and firing ranges to working men’s clubs. The BBC’s Will Gompertz has been to meet the cast.

Blackpool to open new £1.2 million dinner theatre in former nightclub

Blackpool’s former Palace Nightclub is to be converted into a £1.2 million live entertainment and fine dining venue. The Central Promenade site, which was once the largest nightclub in Blackpool but has been closed for several years, is to be converted into The Sands Venue.

West End theatres are 'infested'

4th March 2010

Many West End theatres are infested with rats, mice and fleas, a survey by the actors union Equity has found. Three-quarters of stage managers and actors at 24 venues in London’s West End, which feature world-famous shows, report regular infestations. Many of the theatres date back to the Victorian and Edwardian days.
