Plans for Derby riverside theatre revived

An iconic building standing proud on the banks of the Derwent catering for hundreds of theatre-goers, that is the vision of the councillor with the job of overseeing the city’s cultural life. But it is one which sounds all too familiar to many. It was five years ago that a £30m-plus theatre was first suggested for Derby’s riverside.

Exeter Northcott sells assets

Administrators for the Exeter Northcott theatre are preparing to sell a building to help pay off its debts. Emmanuel Hall in St Thomas is the theatre’s main asset and could fetch more than £250,000. It is currently home to Theatre Alibi and the touring company is now looking for a new base.

Long Eaton Duchess Theatre rises from ashes like phoenix

A theatre that was destroyed by fire six years ago is on course to re-emerge from the ashes in June 2010. The £200,000 new Duchess theatre will be housed in the former methodist church, in Westgate, Long Eaton, and act as a local community centre.

Eastbourne Royal Hippodrome project takes step forward

An ambitious project to make the Royal Hippodrome Theatre the focal point for the regeneration of Eastbourne’s deprived Devonshire Ward has taken an important step forward. A community trust, set up with the blessing of the Borough Council, has now been incorporated as a limited company and will soon be formally registered as a charity.

Blog: How do you measure theatre success?

The play’s a hit – but how can you tell? Backers of a new system claim audience reaction is the best indication of effectiveness. A group of the UK theatre world’s leading industry bodies – The Society of London Theatre, Theatrical Management Association and Independent Theatre Council – have recently come up with what they believe is a completely new way of measuring the effectiveness (or otherwise) of a theatre production blogs Alistair Smith from The Guardian Theatre Blog.

Iconic Ayr Civic theatre enjoys its final days

One of Ayrshire’s most iconic buildings could be bulldozed within days. The Civic Theatre, which has stood in Ayr town centre for more than a century, is set to tumble. Asbestos has finally been removed from the building – meaning the green light for demolition. But Civic fans insist the famous old theatre doesn’t have to fall and South Ayrshire Council has been urged to backtrack on its decision to wipe out an institution.

Child's design to front Oxford theatre

An art installation designed by an Oxfordshire schoolgirl will be central to the new look of an Oxford theatre. The cycle parking piece will stand at the front of the Pegasus Theatre, in Magdalen Road, as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment.
