Curtain up on new Highgate theatre plan

The curtain may soon rise on a new fringe theatre called The Red Hedgehog Playhouse in Highgate run by the team behind the prestigious Red Hedgehog music venue. An empty shop in Archway Road that has languished as a storehouse is being transformed – and bric-a-brac markets to raise £5,000 to complete renovations begin this weekend.

Curtain rises on £14m theatre for Llanelli

Work is set to start before the end of the year on a £14.6m cultural centre that will include a 500-seat theatre as European funding has been secured for the project on derelict land next to Zion Chapel in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. It is called The Works and it is estimated it will create 35 jobs.

Former Derby Hippodrome theatre blaze

11th February 2010

A new safety survey of Derby’s former Hippodrome theatre is to be carried out after it was damaged in a fire on the 10th February. The blaze appears to have started in the basement on the Macklin Street side of the building and quickly spread upwards through the dressing rooms.

The Shanklin Theatre Isle of Wight listed Grade II

10th February 2010

The Secretary of State, after consulting English Heritage, has decided to list the Shanklin Theatre and former Town Hall, Isle of Wight, at Grade II. The Theatres Trust supported the application for listing as the Shanklin is notable in exemplifying an entertainment building of special architectural and historical interest with original features intact.

ATG’s Live Nation purchase cleared by OFT

10th February 2010

Ambassador Theatre Group’s £90 million purchase of Live Nation’s UK theatres has been cleared by the Office of Fair Trading and will not be referred to the Competition Commission. The OFT has been investigating the merger since the end of last year and, following extensive consultation with the industry, has concluded that “there is no realistic prospect of theatregoers losing out through higher prices or an overall reduction in choice of productions or theatres.”

Site-specific show to bring Theatre Royal Haymarket back to its roots

Unseen and overlooked backstage areas at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the West End are to provide the setting for a new site-specific performance at the venue later this month. The production, called La Fille a la Mode, will feature circus performers, dancers and actors, all of whom are involved as part of the venue’s Masterclass programme

Royal Spa Centre given two years to turn itself around

Warwickshire venue the Royal Spa Centre has been given a two-year reprieve to transform itself after the local council considered shutting it down. Warwick District Council, which owns the Leamington Spa theatre, has given its new general manager, Anthony Flint, a two-year window with a brief to improve its fortunes.

Birmingham’s MAC reopens after £15m overhaul

9th February 2010

Birmingham’s Midlands Arts Centre will reopen on May 1 following a £15 million redevelopment project. As part of the scheme, which was jointly funded by Arts Council England, Birmingham City Council and a fund-raising campaign, the centre’s theatre has been stripped out and fitted with new lighting and sound systems and new seating.
