Jermyn Street Theatre still open for business, artistic director insists

Jermyn Street Theatre artistic director Gene David Kirk has moved to reassure theatre-goers that the venue is still open, after a newspaper article wrongly claimed the venue had closed. Kirk said the newspaper had reported on building work taking place on Jermyn Street, which has required some businesses to close until 2012, and added that the theatre was listed as one of them.

Ex-Hackney Empire boss named new chief executive of Fairfield Halls

2nd March 2010

Former Hackney Empire chief executive Simon Thomsett has been appointed chief executive of Fairfield Halls in Croydon. Current CEO Derek Barr is retiring after 40 years working at Fairfield Halls, an arts, entertainment and conference centre. Thomsett, who was one of the founding directors of Shaw Theatre Ltd, will take up his new position in May.

Takings down at Jersey's Opera House

The chairman of Jersey’s Opera House theatre said the ongoing recession has led to low ticket sales meaning shows have had to be cancelled. Pierre Horsfall told BBC Jersey the finances were stable but takings had significantly fallen in the past year. Mr Horsfall said refurbishments were now being planned for the theatre and its show programme was being rethought.

Go-ahead for £350m schools plan in Liverpool includes new theatre

A £350m plan to rebuild or refurbish 24 secondary schools in Liverpool has been given government approval. The plans, which affect 21,000 pupils, will see some schools merge and the building of what Liverpool City Council says are “futuristic” classrooms. A theatre, music facilities and a dance studio are also planned at the new site.

More than 6000 jobs created in cultural and sport sector

More than 6000 jobs have been created in the cultural and sport sectors for young people, minister Ben Bradshaw has announced. Following the government’s pledge to fund employment opportunities for young people, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has secured funding for more than 6500 positions, including around 2300 in the cultural sector.

Review published into first year of government’s Find Your Talent initiative

The first year of the Find Your Talent programme aimed at giving young people aged 5 to 16 in England the chance to try out different cultural and creative activities has received a favourable report in a review commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Exeter Northcott goes into administration

Exeter Northcott, one of the few remaining producing theatres in the south-west of England, has gone into administration, it was revealed today, 26 Feb. The trustees of the theatre took the decision at an emergency board meeting late yesterday evening. They claim that they were given financial information that showed the venue to be insolvent.

Edinburgh’s revamped Usher Hall opens

Edinburgh’s Usher Hall has increased its capacity to 2,900 with the opening this week of a new wing, which is part of its £35 million refurbishment. Only the landscaping remains to complete the project to unite the adjacent Royal Lyceum and Traverse theatres into an arts quarter.

Northcott Theatre in Exeter is put into administration

25th February 2010

The trustees of Exeter’s Northcott Theatre took the decision to place the theatre into administration after being presented with financial information which revealed it to be insolvent. However, Administrator Ian Walker, of Begbies Traynor, said it was his intention to try to ensure Northcott’s spring programme would continue. He added that talks would also be held to try to ensure that a theatre could be maintained in the city.
