Oxford’s Old Fire Station to be homeless and arts centre

Plans are underway to redevelop the Old Fire Station theatre in Oxford into an education and employment centre for homeless people, alongside new arts facilities. Homeless charity Crisis is working in partnership with Oxford City Council to deliver a Skylight centre as part of the redeveloped Old Fire Station, currently known as the OFS Studio Theatre.

Page\Park lands Glasgow's Theatre Royal revamp

14th February 2010

Glasgow-based architects Page\Park has seen off the likes of Caruso St John and Nord Architecture to win the prize £10 million project to design an extension to the city’s Theatre Royal. The outfit also beat Terry Pawson Architects and Tim Ronalds Architects to land the Scottish Opera-backed scheme to improve and increase the public space at the front of the 19th Century theatre.

Blog: Clifton Terrace new theatre planned for Finsbury Park

Plans are being hatched to open a new theatre on Clifton Terrace, the road which runs north from the Wells Terrace entrance to Finsbury Park tube station. With a local school being in the middle of opening its own theatre and plans to turn the old Hornsey Baths building into a theatre too, we could be about to have an abundance of theatres in the area blogs Mark Pack.

The avant-garde views of actor and theatre design enthusiast Laurence Harvey. Date: 1971. Location: London. Through roles in such films as Room at the Top, The Manchurian Candidate and Butterfield 8, Laurence Harvey had attained a spectacular level of fame by the time BD caught up with the then 43-year-old actor. Harvey was backing a project to create an underground theatre at St Peter’s College in Oxford, designed jointly by Norman Foster and Buckminster Fuller.

Curtain up on new Highgate theatre plan

The curtain may soon rise on a new fringe theatre called The Red Hedgehog Playhouse in Highgate run by the team behind the prestigious Red Hedgehog music venue. An empty shop in Archway Road that has languished as a storehouse is being transformed – and bric-a-brac markets to raise £5,000 to complete renovations begin this weekend.

Curtain rises on £14m theatre for Llanelli

Work is set to start before the end of the year on a £14.6m cultural centre that will include a 500-seat theatre as European funding has been secured for the project on derelict land next to Zion Chapel in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. It is called The Works and it is estimated it will create 35 jobs.

Former Derby Hippodrome theatre blaze

A new safety survey of Derby’s former Hippodrome theatre is to be carried out after it was damaged in a fire on the 10th February. The blaze appears to have started in the basement on the Macklin Street side of the building and quickly spread upwards through the dressing rooms.
