July 2010 Update

The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project at PLASA 2010

We will be profiling the Ecovenue project, and all its participants at PLASA 2010 in The Theatres Trust’s very own ‘Ecovenue’ on Stand 2-M28 at Earl’s Court, showcasing the environmental efficiency practices being implemented across the London venues involved with the project. In addition to profiling the venues, the Ecovenue area in Earls Court 2 will also feature technologies designed to rationalise the environmental footprint of theatres.

As part of this initiative, The Theatres Trust will launch its first ‘People’s Choice’ award for sustainable theatrical products to complement the existing PLASA Innovation Award for Environmentally-focused products.

All exhibiting manufacturers at PLASA 2010 are invited, as part of an open call for entries, to put forward products to be considered for this Theatres Trust award. The Theatres Trust will then select those that represent either a significant step forward in the resource efficiency of an existing product or a new product intended to contribute to the resource efficiency of a theatre to be featured in the area.

Visitors to PLASA 2010 will be able to vote on the product they feel best represents progression towards sustainability, while also learning about the advice that the Ecovenue participants are receiving and the experiences of the 24 already signed up to the project.

The PLASA Show runs from the 12th – 15th September. For a Theatres Trust ‘People’s Choice’ award application form, please email Tim Atkinson.

June 2010 Update

We have now begun working with our first twelve venues (see below), and are still open to applications to be one of the next 12 venues to join Ecovenue, our ERDF-funded project to improve the environmental sustainability of 48 London performing arts venues.

We are working with SME venues, who are not currently in receipt of more than €500,000 in aid from public bodies, have no more than €43m on their balance sheets, and have less than 250 full-time employees.

The selected venues will be working with The Theatres Trust until the Summer of 2012, and will receive free Environmental Audits, Display Energy Certificates in the first and second years, assistance in creating/improving Environmental Policies, and be assisted to sign up to the Mayor of London’s Green Procurement Code.

As always if you’d like an Application Form, or have any questions or queries about the project and whether or not your venue may qualify, please contact Tim Atkinson.

The Programme

On 14 September 2009 at Plasa 09 The Theatres Trust announced ECOVENUE, a new three year programme to provide specialist theatre environmental advice and undertake free DEC assessments with 48 small scale theatres in London.

One year on from the launch of the Mayor of London’s “Green Theatre: Taking Action on Climate Change” initiative at Plasa 08, The Theatres Trust announced it is to receive £450,000 over the next three years from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in London to deliver the ECOVENUE advisory programme.

Mhora Samuel, Director of The Theatres Trust said ‘When the Mayor of London’s Green Theatre Plan was launched last year to help theatres in London achieve reductions in carbon emissions by 60% by 2025, commercial and subsidised theatres in London were quick to sign up. We recognised that smaller theatres with less resources would find it harder to participate, and so made an application for funding to the LDA at the beginning of 2009 to help address the gap. I’m delighted that we can announce the ERDF award at Plasa 09 and help more London theatres to address environmental issues associated with climate change and reduce their energy use.’

The Trust will be inviting 48 London theatres to apply to participate in the project, which will run until spring 2012. Successful theatres will receive a free environmental audit, a free Display Energy Certificate and Advisory Report and help to develop an Environmental Policy. They will each go on to receive a free second Display Energy Certificate a year later to help quantify results and promote achievements. Venues will proceed through the project in four quarterly cohorts of 12.
