Streetscape showing the Old Theatre, Chichester, 1992

Colour photograph showing the façade of the Old Theatre within a streetscape of South Street in Chichester. Taken from across the road, it shows a two-storey, red brick building (the second of four separate buildings with the nearest in the foreground to the left) on a corner site where South Street meets Theatre Lane. The façade has been marred by the insertion of a shop front across the full width of the ground floor but above this all is authentic. It has three bays, with the centre bay slightly advanced, all containing a blank square central panel. The wider centre bay also has sash windows, emphasised by a triangular pediment bearing the date 1791, and a brick cornice lines the width of the building with a parapet above concealing a pitched tiled roof. The building is no longer in use as a theatre but the ground floor shop is being used as the box office for the nearby Chichester Festival Theatre. Above the entrance it reads ‘Chichester Festival Theatre Information’ and ‘Chichester Festivities Box Office’. A small white sign attached to the central square panel above reads ‘The Old Theatre’, with another sign hanging from it bearing the words ’92 Festivities Box Office’.
