  • Description
Photograph of a black and white postcard showing a side elevation of the Camberwell Palace of Varieties, with the Camberwell Empire in the background, within a streetscape of Denmark Hill in London. The Camberwell Palace lies just left of centre on the postcard, on the left hand side of the road where Denmark Hill meets Orpheus Street, next door to a public house called The Golden Lion. (The façade is out of shot, around the corner.) The sidewall is very plain, devoid of any features apart from a line of balustrades along the roof with the name ‘Camberwell Palace’ below a figure of a lion in the centre. ‘Palace’ appears in tablature on an exposed rear wall. The Camberwell Empire, otherwise known as the Theatre Metropole, can be seen in the background on the right hand side of the road, situated on the curved corner where Denmark Hill meets Coldharbour Lane. Tablature spelling ‘Empire’ is clearly visible underneath a pediment and lone statue at the top of the building.
