  • Description
Colour photograph showing the auditorium of the former Playhouse Theatre in Colchester. Taken from the stalls looking towards the stage left side of the auditorium, it shows the curved front of a balcony ending in a round-headed box to the left. The front of the balcony is decorated with matching wreath medallions and anthemion ornaments. Three (of four) pilasters articulate the sidewall above the balcony supporting a deep decorative frieze, with a huge ceiling dome partly in shot above. The former theatre is in use as a public house, and old posters relating to theatre days have been used to decorate the auditorium. Two posters in shot to the right of the box advertise ‘This was the Army’ starring Jack Lewis, and ‘Radio Round-Up’ with Michael Bentine, Wilson, Keppel & Betty, Dudley Dale, and Penny Nicholls amongst others.
