Façade the Hippodrome, London

87
000087.jpg

Black and white postcard showing the façade of The Hippodrome on the corner of Cranbourne Street and Charing Cross Road in London. Its skeletal dome, supporting a sculptured group of a chariot with rearing horses, crowns the corner tower of the façade. Pilasters separate each bay with roman figures standing on the top of each, and a decorated canopy, with ‘HIPPODROME’ appearing across its centre, covers the main entrance. ‘HIPPODROME’ also appears in large lettering in the centre of the façade, and ‘LONDON HIPPODROME’ can be seen in terracotta underneath the dome. Each entrance is labelled just above the canopy with ‘STALLS’, ‘BOXES & DRESS CIRCLE’ and ‘BOX OFFICE’ from left to right respectively.
