Façade the Hippodrome, London, circa 1914
  • Description
Black and white postcard showing the façade of The Hippodrome on the corner of Cranbourne Street and Charing Cross Road in London. Its skeletal dome, supporting a sculptured group of a chariot with rearing horses, crowns the corner tower of the façade. Pilasters separate each bay with roman figures standing on the top of each. ‘HIPPODROME’ appears in large lettering in the centre of the façade, and ‘LONDON HIPPODROME’ can be seen in terracotta underneath the dome. A decorated canopy covers the main entrance, beneath which advertising signage is visible. A poster advertising the current show starring ‘The Moscow Esthetic Dancers’ hangs on the far sidewall above the canopy.
