Details

A pleasing little Art Deco theatre, restored and reopened in 1998 after years of use as bingo house and cinema. The main axis of the building is parallel with Coronation Street with the main entrance on the left hand side and the stage, with get in doors, on the right. There is an unfortunate lack of space front of house. The ground floor is at present subdivided into two areas by a vertical wall following the curve of the front circle. The space beneath the circle was converted into a small cinema. Between the ends of the circle and the proscenium are two boxes each side, the fronts of which are adorned with simple moulding. The proscenium arch is almost square and bordered by several bands of plaster mouldings. The richly decorated ceiling is divided into panels supported by four tall mermaid figures. Six dressing rooms are available on three floors to stage right. The interior is a good example of its kind, and it is to be hoped that the theatre use will become permanent.
