Details

The building occupies an irregular sloping piece of land with the façe angled at approximately 45 degrees between Castle Gates and Meadow Place. The façe is narrow and tall. Above the entrance are four Corinthian columns supporting a deep architrave. The entrance and vestibule are on the same level as the front circle. The stalls is now divided into three sections, the front of which retains the original rake, and the rear two, terraced. The proscenium is framed by fluted Ionic columns. In the side wing walls are similar columns at the end of a long balustrade behind which rise three tall arched metallic grills which give a symbolic appearance of boxes at slightly below dress circle level. Frieze and cornice over, continuing along the top of the proscenium with classical figures. Single deep balcony with plain side walls. Capacity was 1488 in 1972 (before bingo conversion).
