Details
The New Hall opened on 17 March 1873, attached to the New Inn, which by August 1873 had changed its name to the London Inn. The act drop showed Trentham Hall with the river in front. On 22 December 1884 it was totally refurbished to reopen as the Gaiety. The auditorium had a balcony, and its decorations were compared with the Alhambra Palace, London (q.v.): on all sides of the hall were mirrors; the private box was fitted up luxuriously. Adjacent to the Hall was a gentlemen's lounge which had a connection with the hotel, although not during performances. The Gaiety was demolished in 1891 for the building of the Empire (q.v.).
