Details

Contemporary with Blackpool Grand; described as elaborately decorated with Rococo plasterwork and painted panels ‘carried out in Watteau treatment by Ballard’. The one illustration seen shows a density of ornament comparable with Matcham’s original (1892) Edinburgh Empire. The 1935 conversion to a cinema with one large balcony left little more than Matcham’s external walls. The façe was extensively altered, plastered over and extended at the sides. It was demolished in 1987, by which time it was nearly derelict.
